Kilmeny (a Song Of The Trawlers) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAABCBD AAAABDBD AAAAECBD BCBD

Dark dark lay the drifters against the red westA
As they shot their long meshes of steel oversideA
And the oily green waters were rocking to restA
When Kilmeny went out at the turn of the tideA
And nobody knew where that lassie would roamB
For the magic that called her was tapping unseenC
It was well nigh a week ere Kilmeny came homeB
And nobody knew hwere Kilmeny had beenD
-
She'd a gun at her bow that was Newcastle's bestA
And a gun at her stern that was fresh from the ClydeA
And a secret her skipper had never confessedA
Not even at dawn to his newly wed brideA
And a wireless that whispered above like a gnomeB
The laughter of London the boasts of BerlinD
O it may have been mermaids that lured her from homeB
But nobody knew where Kilmeny had beenD
-
It was dark when Kilmeny came home from her questA
With her bridge dabbled red where her skipper had diedA
But she moved like a bride with a rose at her breastA
And Well done Kilmeny the admiral criedA
Now at sixty four fathom a conger may comeE
And nose at the bones of a drowned submarineC
But late in the evening Kilmeny came homeB
And nobody knew where Kilmeny had beenD
-
There's a wandering shadow that stares at the foamB
Though they sing all night to old England their queenC
Late late in the evening Kilmeny came homeB
And nobody knew where Kilmeny had beenD
