I stand this way on cloudy winter days	A
From dawn to dusk and I soap heads	B
Shave them and powder them and speak	C
Indifferent words stupid foolish	D
Most heads are completely shut	E
They sleep limply And others read again	F
And look slowly through long lids	G
As though they had sucked everything dry	H
Still others open the red cracks of their mouths wide	I
And tell jokes	J
For my part I smile courteously Ah I hide	I
Deep under these smiles as though in a coffin	K
The terrible repressed wise complaints	L
About the fact that we are forced into this existence	M
Jammed in firmly and inescapably trapped	N
As though in jail and we wear chains	O
Confusing hard that we do not understand	P
And the fact that each man is distant and estranged from himself	Q
As though from a neighbor whom he does not know at all	R
And whose house he has always only seen from the outside	I
Sometimes when I am shaving a chin	K
Knowing that a whole life	S
Is in my power that I am now master	T
I a barber and that a missed stroke	U
A slice too deep cuts off the round cheerful head	V
That lies before me he is thinking of a woman	W
Books business from his body	X
As though it were a loose button on a vest	Y
I am overcome Then the feeling came over me this animal	Z
Is there The animal both my knees knock	A2
And like a small boy tearing paper	T
Without knowing why	H
And like students who kill gas lamps	B2
And like children who turn so red	V
When they tear the wings of captured flies	C2
So I would like to do the same	D2
As if it were a slip	E2
To make a scratch with my knife on such a chin	K
I would too gladly watch the red stream of blood spray	F2
