Hugo Von Hofmannsthal's Barber Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJIKLMNOPQRI KSTUVWXYZA2THB2VC2D2 E2KF2

I stand this way on cloudy winter daysA
From dawn to dusk and I soap headsB
Shave them and powder them and speakC
Indifferent words stupid foolishD
Most heads are completely shutE
They sleep limply And others read againF
And look slowly through long lidsG
As though they had sucked everything dryH
Still others open the red cracks of their mouths wideI
And tell jokesJ
For my part I smile courteously Ah I hideI
Deep under these smiles as though in a coffinK
The terrible repressed wise complaintsL
About the fact that we are forced into this existenceM
Jammed in firmly and inescapably trappedN
As though in jail and we wear chainsO
Confusing hard that we do not understandP
And the fact that each man is distant and estranged from himselfQ
As though from a neighbor whom he does not know at allR
And whose house he has always only seen from the outsideI
Sometimes when I am shaving a chinK
Knowing that a whole lifeS
Is in my power that I am now masterT
I a barber and that a missed strokeU
A slice too deep cuts off the round cheerful headV
That lies before me he is thinking of a womanW
Books business from his bodyX
As though it were a loose button on a vestY
I am overcome Then the feeling came over me this animalZ
Is there The animal both my knees knockA2
And like a small boy tearing paperT
Without knowing whyH
And like students who kill gas lampsB2
And like children who turn so redV
When they tear the wings of captured fliesC2
So I would like to do the sameD2
As if it were a slipE2
To make a scratch with my knife on such a chinK
I would too gladly watch the red stream of blood sprayF2
