St. Laurence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ

Within the broken VaticanA
The murdered Pope is lying deadB
The soldiers of ValerianA
Their evil hands are wet and redB
-
Unarmed unmoved St Laurence waitsC
His cassock is his only mailD
The troops of Hell have burst the gatesC
But Christ is Lord He shall prevailD
-
They have encompassed him with steelE
They spit upon his gentle faceF
He smiles and bleeds nor will revealE
The Church's hidden treasure placeF
-
Ah faithful steward worthy knightG
Well hast thou done Behold thy feeH
Since thou hast fought the goodly fightG
A martyr's death is fixed for theeH
-
St Laurence pray for us to bearI
The faith which glorifies thy nameJ
St Laurence pray for us to shareI
The wounds of Love's consuming flameJ
