They Cannot See The Wreaths We Place Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDD EFEFGG HIHIJJ

They cannot see the wreaths we placeA
Upon the silent bierB
They cannot see the tear stained faceA
Nor feel the scalding tearC
And now can flowers or graven stoneD
For wrongs done them in life atoneD
-
Better the flower that smooths the thornsE
On earthly pathway foundF
Than that which uselessly adornsE
The bier or silent moundF
And neither tear nor floral tokenG
Retracts the hasty word when spokenG
-
Then strew the flowers ere life has fledH
While yet their eyes discernI
Why waste their fragrance on the deadH
Who no fond smile returnI
The heaving breast with sorrow achesJ
Comfort the throbbing heart which breaksJ
