The Suicide Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA DEED FGGH IJJI KLLK MNNM OIIO PQQP ORRO

What anguish rankled 'neath that silent breastA
What spectral figures mocked those staring eyesB
Luring them on to Stygian mysteriesC
What overpowering sense of grief distressedA
-
What desperation nerved that rigid handD
To pull the trigger with such deadly aimE
What deep remorse or terror overcameE
The dread inherent of death's shadowy strandD
-
Perhaps the hand of unrelenting fateF
Fell with such tragic pressure that the mindG
In frenzy uncontrollable and blindG
Sought but the darkness black and desolateH
-
Perhaps 'twas some misfortune's stunning blightI
Perhaps unmerited though deep disgraceJ
Or vision of a wronged accusing faceJ
Pictured indelibly before the sightI
-
Perhaps the gnawing of some secret sinK
Some aberration fraught with morbid gloomL
A buried hope which ever burst its tombL
Despondency disaster or chagrinK
-
That heart which throbbed in pain and discontentM
Is silent as the grave for which it yearnedN
That brain which once with proud ambition burnedN
Now oozes through the bullet's ghastly rentM
-
Those eyes transfixed with such a gruesome stareO
Once beamed with laughter innocent and brightI
The morning gave no presage of the nightI
A smile may be the prelude of despairO
-
Whate'er his secret it remains untoldP
For why to human anguish add one groanQ
Is grief the deeper grief because unknownQ
So let the grave his form and burden holdP
-
Ye who have felt no crushing weight of careO
From blame profuse in charity refrainR
Some depths of sorrow overwhelm the brainR
Some loads too great for human strength to bearO
