The Silvery San Juan Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEAAFFGGHH IIJJFFKKAAHHLLFFAA

Wherever I wander my spirit still dwellsA
In the silvery San Juan with its streamlet and dellsA
Whose mountainous summits so rugged and highB
With their pinnacles pierce the ethereal skyB
Where the daisy the rose and the sweet columbineC
Blend their colors with those of the sober hued pineC
Where the ceaseless erosions of measureless timeD
Have chiseled the grotto and canon sublimeD
Have sculptured the cliff and the stern mountain wallE
Have formed the bold turret impressive and tallE
Have cut the deep gorge with its wonderful cavesA
Sepulchral and gloomy whose vast architravesA
Support the stalactites both pendant and whiteF
Which with the stalagmites beneath them uniteF
Where nestles a valley sequestered and grandG
Worn out of the rock by the same tireless handG
Surrounded by mountains majestic and grayH
Which smile from their heights on the Town of OurayH

Wherever I wander my ears hear the soundI
Of thy waters which plunge with a turbulent boundI
O'er the precipice seething and laden with foamJ
My ears hear their music wherever I roamJ
Where the cataract's rhapsody joyous and lightF
Enchants in the morning and soothes in the nightF
Where blend the loud thunders sonorous and deepK
With the sobs of the rain as the black heavens weepK
Where the whispering zephyr and murmuring breezeA
Unite with the soft listless sigh of the treesA
And where to the fancy the voices of airH
Wail in tones of distress or in shrieks of despairH
Where mourneth the night wind with desolate breathL
In accents suggestive of sorrow and deathL
As falls from the heavens so fleecy and lightF
The winter's immaculate mantle of whiteF
Wherever I wander these sounds greet my earsA
And the silvery San Juan to my fancy appearsA
