Ill fares the land to hastening ills a preyA
Where wealth accumulates and men decayA
GoldsmithB

-
I fear the palace of the richC
I fear the hovel of the poorD
Though fortified by moat and ditchC
The castle strong could not endureE
Nor can the squalid hovel beF
A source of strength and those who causeG
This widening discrepancyF
Infringe on God's eternal lawsH
-
The heritage of man the earthI
Was framed for homes not vast estatesJ
A lowering scale of human worthI
Each generation demonstratesJ
Which feels the landlord's iron handK
And hopeless plod with effort braveL
Who love no home can love no landK
These own no home until the graveL
-
The nation's strongest safeguards lieM
In free and unencumbered homesN
Not in its hordes of vagrancyF
Nor in its proud palatial domesN
Nor can the mercenary swordO
E'er cross with that the freeman drawsH
Nor oil upon the waters pouredO
Perpetuate an unjust causeG
-
Eternal Justice still prevailP
And stay this menace ere too lateQ
Ere sturdy manhood droop and failP
The law immutable of fateQ
No foe can daunt the stalwart heartR
Of him who guards that sacred groundS
Where every hero owns a partR
Where each an ample home has foundS
-
No more shall battle's lurid gleamT
The cloudless sky of peace obscureE
Nor blood becrimson field or streamT
Nor avarice grind down the poorD
But onward let thy progress beF
A pageant beautiful and grandK
May He who e'er has guided theeF
Protect thee still my native landK
