The Darker Side Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB ACDC AAEA FAGA AHIH JKBK

They say that all nature is smiling and gayA
And the birds the most happy of allB
But the sparrow pursued by the sparrowhawkA
Savors more of the wormwood and gallB
-
They say that all nature is smiling and gayA
But the groan may dissemble the laughC
E'en now from the meadow is wafted the soundD
Of a bovine bewailing her calfC
-
They say that all nature is smiling and gayA
But the moss often covers the rockA
Every animal form is beset by a foeE
For the wolf always follows the flockA
-
For the animal holds all inferior fleshF
As its just and legitimate preyA
Every scream of the eagle a panic createsG
As the weaker things scamper awayA
-
They say that all nature is smiling and gayA
But the smiles are all needed to sweetenH
The struggle we see so incessantly wagedI
To eat and avoid being eatenH
-
And men with their genial competitive waysJ
Present no decided improvementsK
For their personal gain they will sacrifice allB
Who may stand in the way of their movementsK
