Smiles Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG AHAH CIJI KLKL MNMN OPOQ

There is the warm congenial smileA
Benign and honest tooB
Free from deception fraud and guileA
The smile of friendship trueB
-
There is the smile most fair to seeC
Which wreathes the modest glanceD
Of spotless maiden purityC
The smile of innocenceE
-
There is the smile of woman's loveF
That potent siren spellG
Which uplifts men to heaven aboveF
Or lures them down to hellG
-
There is the vain derisive smileA
Of cynical conceitH
The drunken leer the grimace vileA
Of lives with crime repleteH
-
There is the smile of vacancyC
Expressionless we findI
On idiot physiognomyJ
The vacuum of a mindI
-
There is a smile which more than tearsK
Or language can expressL
The grim disguise which anguish wearsK
The mask of dire distressL
-
There is a smile of practiced artM
More false than treason's kissN
But penetrate that dual heartM
And hear the serpent's hissN
-
A smile the visage shall embraceO
When nature's cup is fullP
Behind the stern and frowning faceO
There lies a grinning skullQ
