An Apostrophe To The MoonA
-
-
O silvery moon fair mistress of the nightB
Thou mellow ever vaccilating orbC
How many eons of unmeasured timeD
Hast thou observant from thy astral poiseE
Thy ever changing station in the skiesF
Beheld the wastes of earth of air and spaceG
Ruling the waters and the sombre nightB
-
Pale queen of night fair coquette of the skiesF
Thou who with fickle sweet inconstancyH
Receives the smile from the admiring sunI
And straight transmits it to the sordid earthJ
How many cycles of the silent pastK
Hast thou beheld the rise and fall of manL
His proud ascendency and swift declineM
His zenith and his pitiful decayN
E'er he emerged from out the dismal caveO
His habitation rude and primitiveP
E'er yet the forest trembled at his strokeQ
E'er his indenting chisel cleaved the stonesR
And framed the first crude human domicileS
-
As time rolled on and human skill advancedT
By almost imperceptible degreesU
Of slow experimental tutorageV
Along a nobler more artistic planeW
He hewed the stones in form of ornamentX
Sculptured device of various designM
Embellishment of cunning symmetryH
Man's first attempt to scale the realms of artY
-
Thou hast beheld him on his suppliant kneelS
Engaged in worship audible or muteZ
Invoking thy protection and thy aidA2
Thy gracious favor and beatitudeA2
With arms outstretched in reverential aweB2
Propitiating thee with fervent prayerC2
For the remission of thy baleful strokeQ
Thou hast beheld his superstitious fearD2
And heard his curses and his solemn prayersE2
As thy dark form eclipsed the smiling sunI
-
Thou hast beheld him fashion and adornF2
The gorgeous altar and the totem poleS
With fervent zeal and blind simplicityA2
From base materials of wood or stoneG2
Carve out a God then kneel and worship itA2
-
Thou too hast heard the slave whip's poignant crackH2
The sound of avarice and turpitudeA2
As hands unwilling plied their arduous taskI2
Creating monuments to iron willS
Human injustice greed and servitudeA2
-
Thou hast beheld him shape the pyramidsJ2
Heap up the mound and build the massive wallS
Create the castle and the towering spireK2
The ponderous dome and stately edificeL2
-
-
-
From thy observant orbit in the skiesF
Did'st thou behold that sacrilegious towerM2
Which reared its massive form on Babel's plainW
Built by misguided and presumptuous menN2
In vain and ineffectual attemptA2
To scale the heavens surreptitiouslyA2
-
E'er the completion of the impious pileS
Thou mayest have heard with silent nonchalanceO2
That strange catastrophe of human speechP2
That dire confusion of the languagesQ2
Confounding all the tongues and dialectsR2
To unknown chaos of peculiar soundsS2
-
Changing the conversation of the dayA2
To accents strange and unintelligibleS
Unlike to common and accepted termsT2
To tones mysterious and unnaturalS
Conglomerated forms of utteranceU2
Which bore no semblance to the human voiceV2
Some rent the air with unaccustomed wordsW2
Striving in desperation to converseX2
With ears which heard but could not understandA2
-
Some cursed with oaths unknown to all but themY2
While some essayed to frame the words of prayerC2
Or to articulate the stern commandA2
And one in most supreme authorityA2
Declaimed a ponderous regal ordinanceU2
But heard a sea of unfamiliar soundsS2
Confused and desultory turbulence and dissonance of harshZ2
discordant tonesR
Instead of due attention and applauseA3
Nor were his words and usual forms of speechP2
Respected by the idle wondering craftA2
Which lately comprehended and obeyedA2
-
Workmen addressed each other but conveyedA2
No sense of meaning in their jargoningsA3
Nor had cognizance from the stammered tonesA3
Answered in turn in verbal nothingnessA3
The crabbed cynic might no longer railS
Nor those of sober countenance discourseA3
In melancholy and foreboding strainsA3
Nor light and frivolous sons of levityA2
On others perpetrate the humorous jestA2
Fathers attempted to correct their sonsA3
Who listening with filial reverenceA3
Heard but unknown and strange garrulityA2
-
Some shrank in terror as their ears discernedA2
Their own distorted efforts to converseA3
Some ran in aimless frenzy to and froB3
Falling upon the earth with frantic criesA3
Some stood in gaping wonder nor perceivedA2
The dire calamity which bound them allS
In one unbroken chain of miseryA2
Some beat their breasts in paroxysmal woeB3
Some wore the driveling look of idiocyA2
Some lost their reason and serenely smiledA2
Some stalked with features imperturbableS
Finding no tear nor vent for their distressA3
Some groaned some shrieked some wept in their despairC2
Relaxing all attempts at vocal speechP2
Some recognized the face but not the voiceA3
Of some familiar friend and grasped the handA2
Spoke with the eyes when words no longer servedA2
-
-
-
Did'st thou behold that temple which aroseA3
On Mount Moriah's slope the proud resultA2
Of the endeavors of a noble raceA3
Whose tireless energy and wondrous skillS
In architecture and the various artsA3
Were famed throughout the world whose nimble handsA3
Carved out the pillar and the pedestalS
The column polished and cylindricalS
The slab and ornamented architraveO
From Parian marble of unblemished hueC3
With stately cedars from the sloping sidesA3
Of proud but long denuded LebanonI
Erected that superb and marvelous pileS
Whose wondrous grandeur and imposing formD3
Correct proportions and true symmetryA2
And perfect uniformity of shapeE3
Beauty of contour and embellishmentA2
Splendor of finish and magnificenceA3
Excelled the proudest edifice of earthJ
A fitting tribute to the DeityA2
-
-
-
Thou hast beheld the triumphs of his skillS
Touched by the desolating hand of timeD
Crumble disintegrate and pass awayA2
Resolved to pristine particles of dustA2
-
His strongest castle bold and insolentA2
Of warlike aspect and defiant mienF3
With wall and rampart unassailableS
Impregnable to the assaults of manL
Surrender at the mold's insidious treadA2
-
Thou hast beheldA2
His palace and his most exalted courtsA3
Bestrewn with fragments of the PeristyleS
The broken column slab and monolithG3
O'erhung with pendant moss and slimy moldA2
Its dismal haunts and gloomy aperturesA3
Become the habitation of the batA2
The hissing serpent and the scorpionI
The basking lizard dull and indolentA2
And forms of reptile foul and venomousA3
-
The throne where ruled the king with iron swayA2
Is vacant as the empty wastes of airC2
Is ruled by desolation and decayA2
No more the sceptered voice in stern commandA2
Rings through its halls nor can the dazzling flashH3
Of the tiara and the diademY2
The ensign and insignia of powerM2
The emblazoned crest and jeweled coat of armsA3
Or proud escutcheon of illustrious nameI3
Excite with envy or inspire with fearD2
-
The boisterous carousal and the soundA2
Of wassail mirth inebriate and loudA2
And midnight revelry is hushed and stillS
-
Time shifts the scenesA3
The haughty prince and the most abject slaveO
Who cowered and trembled 'neath his austere glanceA3
The fawning and ignoble sycophantA2
The courtier and the basest serf have metA2
On equal terms beneath the silent dustA2
-
From thy celestial 'minions thou hast seenF3
His proudest temples sink into decayA2
Grim desolation and desuetudeA2
The silent hush succeed the plaintive hymnJ3
The anthem cease to swell in rhythmic praiseA3
Or vaulted dome re echo with the soundA2
Of pipe of organ harp and dulcimerM2
The voice of sacerdotal eloquenceA3
Become as silent as the unborn thoughtA2
The fragrant perfume of the frankincenseA3
The scent of swinging censor and of myrrhM2
Supplanted by foul odors of decayA2
The sacred flame extinguished and forgotA2
Its votaries and congregations fledA2
The forms who ministered and forms who kneltA2
The burnished altar and the hoary priestA2
Commingling their atoms in the dustA2
-
-
-
Thou too hast heard the clash of hostile armsA3
The blast of trumpet and the martial treadA2
The neigh of charger anxious for the frayA2
The din and the confusion of the fightA2
The noise and turmoil of contending hostsA3
The crunch of breaking bones and shrieks of painW
The angry challenge and defiant tauntA2
The cries of rage and curses of despairC2
The dying groan and gnash of clench ed teethK3
The plea for mercy with uplifted armsA3
As through the bosom plunged the ruthless steelS
The clank of shackles and the captives groanG2
As marched the vanquished forth to servitudeA2
To ceaseless toil rewarded by the scourgeV
To stand within the slave marts and endureL3
The taunts and bear the chains of slaveryA2
-
Did'st thou look down with neutral radianceA3
On that incursion from the Scythian plainW
A surging multitude beyond the powerM2
Of mental computation and which seemedA2
A seething mass of spears and shapes of warM3
A sea of bellicose barbarityA2
O'erwhelming helpless and ill fated TyreK2
With a resistless deluge of the swordA2
-
Or when that vast and uncomputed hordeA2
Swept westward from the steppes of TartaryK2
With stern Atilla riding at its headA2
Leaving in ruthless Mongol truculenceA3
Awake both red and blackened by the torchN3
The scourge perhaps of God perhaps of HellS
-
Did'st thou not flinch when t'ward the Christian westA2
The fell invasion of the SaracenW
Headed its course with crimson scimitarK2
Supplanting the mild precepts of the CrossA3
With those of lust of hate and bigotryK2
-
-
-
-
Did'st thou not weep when proud Atlantis sunkO3
Beneath the surging and engulfing wavesA3
The aftermath of Earth's most tragic shockP3
Or when the ark upon that greatest floodA2
Which from the black and pregnant heavens fellS
For forty days and forty weary nightsA3
Above the ruins of a deluged worldA2
Floated in safety with its living freightA2
-
Did'st Thou look down in idle apathyK2
When grim Vesuvius from his dormant restA2
Awoke in molten fury and o'ercameI3
With liquid flood and scoriaceous hailS
The sleeping cities which beneath him layA2
Interring with such fiery burialS
That neither remnant nor inhabitantA2
Escaped from that both grave and funeral pyreK2
Nor vestige of their proud magnificenceA3
Rose from the scene with charred and blackened formI3
And rolling centuries in passing leftA2
But dim remembrance in the minds of menW
-
Did'st thou in age more ancient and remoteA2
Gaze from thy poise with cold complacencyA3
Upon the guilty cities of the plainW
Surcharged with lust and the extremes of sinW
Which Holy Writ avers when 'neath the showerK2
Of well deserved combustion from the skiesA3
They sunk in conflagration with their viceA3
And perishing to ages yet to comeI3
Bequeathed a foul and blasted heritageV
An infamous and execrated nameI3
-
-
-
Art thou to human anguish so inuredA2
That thou hast neither sentiment of griefQ3
Nor sense of pity for terrestrial illsA3
Can agonizing and heart rending scenesA3
Relax thy obdurate and placid faceA3
To semblance of emotion Can man's woesA3
Excite thy tranquil immobilityA3
To the pathetic look of tendernessA3
Or touch thy bosom's calm indifferenceA3
With profuse throbs of sympathetic ruthR3
Can'st thou unmoved behold the widow's tearsA3
Or those of orphaned childish innocenceA3
Or those which wondering infant eyes have shedA2
On unresponsive breasts which nevermoreK2
Throb with maternal warmth and suckle themI3
Can'st thou with cold unsympathizing lightA2
Illuminate the ruined maid's despairK2
Without the echo of a lunar groanW
Hast thou no pang of sorrow or regretA2
For guilty man nor tear for his distressA3
Or are the tides within thy moist controlS
The copious weepings of thy mellow lidsA3
Thy sea of teardrops shed for human woesA3
-
-
-
Did'st thou behold when that most favored starK2
Transcending in refulgence all the orbsA3
Of boundless and bejewelled firmamentA2
With flash of overwhelming brilliancyA3
Plunged through the wondering heavens whose pale spheresA3
In contrast dimmed to insignificanceA3
And gliding through the twinkling realms of spaceA3
Burst with such splendor as the envious starsA3
Had never witnessed since the heavens stoodA2
Halting in glory o'er Judea's plainW
-
Halted and burned in stellar reverenceA3
Above a fold where wrapped in swaddling clothesA3
A new born infant in a manger layA2
In humble contrast to the throne of lightA2
He left to tread the thorny paths of earthJ
In undefiled and stainless innocenceA3
Which earth with all her foul iniquitiesA3
Might never tarnish nor pollute with sinW
-
Perhaps upon that sage triumvirateA2
Which journeyed from the famed and affluent EastA2
In regal pomp and rich munificenceA3
To lay their costly presents at His feetA2
And worship at that new born infant's shrineW
Thou shed'st thy mellow rays and lit the wayA2
O'er deserts to the hills of BethlehemI3
Dividing honors with that prince of starsA3
-
Wert thou a witness on that selfsame nightA2
When humble shepherds on Judea's hillsA3
Watching their flocks with all attentive careK2
Beheld unwonted grandeur in the skiesA3
The ordinary stars were glitteringS3
In unaccustomed glory and the orbsA3
Which twinkle in that pale celestial trainW
Which cleaves in twain the ambient universeA3
Had changed their milky hue to that of goldA2
But all the forms of stellar brilliancyA3
Made way for that most bright and luminousA3
Which glowed with holy radiance which mightA2
Not emanate from aught but sacred starK2
Dispensing such serene magnificenceA3
That e'en the admiring heavens stood abashedA2
-
At such a sightA2
Though savoring more of blessing than of curseA3
Small marvel 'twas their unenlightened mindsA3
Were seized with sudden and peculiar fearK2
So that their trembling knees together smoteA2
And as they stoodA2
In awestruck trepidation and alarmI3
The heavens as the bifurcated doorK2
Of some familiar hospitable tentA2
Parted their gorgeous curtains and disclosedA2
A multitude of the celestial hostA2
Numerous beyond all efforts to computeA2
Solemn of countenance yet beautifulS
Beyond the comprehension of the eyeT3
Surging in such immaculate arrayA2
Of various raiment as the stainless whiteA2
Of snows which countless centuries have placedA2
On rugged Ararat's tremendous heightsA3
Were blended in an essenceA3
-
Then for a moment's timeI3
The heavens were silent as those forms were fairK2
Then instantly throughout the realms of lightA2
Was heard a crash in sacred unisonW
As all the trumpets and the harps of heavenW
And all the varied instruments of earthJ
Had burst in one grand detonating chordA2
Now rose the quavering vibratory tonesA3
Of flageolet and solitary reedA2
Now as a blending of all instrumentsA3
In echoing harmonics sweet and lowS
In soft reverberating resonanceA3
The voice of cornet and sonorous hornW
Blent with the warbling accents of the fluteA2
And chime of mellow bells unknown to earthJ
Paean of dulcimer and harpsichordA2
In combination of concordant toneW
Melting the stars with dulcet symphonyA3
-
But sweeter than those instruments of joyV
Tuned by angelic fingers rose the strainsA3
Of vocal concord and mellifluenceA3
As swelled in chorus those seraphic throatsA3
In falling cadence and ecstatic flightA2
Surpassing heaven's grandest melodyA3
In all that appertains to choral songU3
The acme of celestial harmonyA3
Which angel ears discerned with glad surpriseA3
But sweeter than that song the glad refrainW
Wafted from angel tongues innumerableS
To earth and the inhabitants thereofV3
Peace Peace on Earth the Deity's Good WillS
-
-
-
Didst thou not shrink when on Golgotha's crestA2
Three crosses as three grizzly spectres roseA3
Spreading their ghastly arms protestinglyS
In silent malediction o'er the sceneW
And even nature paused and stood aghastA2
In shuddering horror at the awful sightA2
Relaxing with the trembling earthquake shockP3
Her sympathetic tensionW
And when the lightning rent the canopyA3
Of black sepulchral clouds which like a shroudA2
Enveloped earth on that terrific nightA2
They lit a face compassionate and pureK2
E'en from beneath the cruel crown of thornsA3
Glancing in pity kindled not with wrathW3
At his tormentors those who loved him notA2
The multitude which surged about the crossA3
Cursing with accents vile and crying loudA2
Crucify Him Crucify HimI3
-
Rejected and despised of menW
Earth which hath ever slain her noblest sonsA3
Slays also her RedeemerK2
-
-
-
Creation is but systematized decayA2
And Change is blazoned on the very skiesA3
As in ephemeral telluric scenesA3
And through the whole cosmogony of worldsA3
Is written and rewrittenW
-
Thou who hast seen the stately mastodonW
Roam at his will o'er earth's prolific plainsA3
And the unwieldy megatheriumI3
Dragging his cumbrous disproportioned weightA2
Through quaternary marsh and stagnant fenW
Or watched the ichthyosaurus plow the seasA3
Churning the waters till the glistening foamI3
Rode on the greenish undulating wavesA3
And huge saurian and reptilian shapesA3
Amphibious and pelagic swim and crawlS
Cleaving the waters with tremendous strokesA3
Writhing with foul contortions in disportA2
Splashing and laving in the thermal seasA3
Of the remote and prehistoric pastA2
Thou who hast seen them fail and pass awayA2
Shalt also shine when man has disappearedA2
-
Thou who hast seen the rank luxurianceA3
Of vegetation flourish and decayA2
Vanish and pass away insensiblyS
Perish from off the earth which nourished itA2
And time supplant its rich exuberanceA3
With arid wastes of bleak sterilityA2
Wilt thou look down in silent unconcernW
When countless eons of denuding timeI3
Have rendered earth as barren as thyselfV3
Bereft of verdure's last habilimentA2
When men with all their passions and desiresA3
Their strange combines of evil and of goodA2
Their proud achievements and exalted aimsA3
Have passed away foreverK2
-
The universe is but a sepulcherK2
For worlds defunct as earth for living formsA3
And thou O Moon who hast surveyed all thisA3
Thyself shalt be consumed with fervent heatA2
For e'en the firmament shall pass awayA2
-
-
-
Supreme IntelligenceA3
Thou who createst worlds and satellitesA3
And Who canst estimate the universeA3
Weighing the heavens in Thy balancesA3
Who hast ordained the laws of cosmic spaceA3
To guide aright the planetary spheresA3
Thou Ruler of the infinite and greatA2
Alike of vast and infinitesimalS
Thou fundamental cause of all that isA3
In process of creation and decayA2
In the mutation and the ravagesA3
Sequent of constant lapse and flight of timeI3
Reveal Thy laws that we may follow themI3
Help us to recognize in all Thy worksA3
Whether of atom or stupendous massA3
The hand of DeityA2
