As Life's receding sunset fadesA
And night descendsB
I calmly watch the gathering shadesA
As darkness stealthily invadesA
And daylight endsB
-
Earth's span is drawing to its closeC
With every breathD
My pain racked brain no respite knowsE
Yet shrinks it from the grim reposeE
It feels in deathD
-
The curtain falls on Life's last sceneF
The end is nearedG
At last I face death's somber screenF
The fleeting joys which interveneF
Have disappearedG
-
And as a panoramic scrollH
The past unreelsE
The mocking past beyond controlH
Though buried as a parchment rollH
Its tale revealsE
-
I stand before the dread unknownI
Yet solemn factJ
I see the seeds of folly sownI
In wayward years maturely grownI
Nor can retractJ
-
My weaknesses rise to my sightK
And now too lateL
I fain would former actions rightK
Which years have buried in their flightK
Now sealed by fateL
-
My frailties and iniquitiesE
I plainly seeE
Committed acts accusive riseE
Omitted duties criticiseE
In mockeryE
-
I feel I have offended oftM
E'en at my bestN
Have failed to guide my course aloftM
Perhaps in trival hour have scoffedM
With idle jestN
-
Prone to misgiving prone to doubtO
And frail from birthP
More light and frivolous than devoutO
With life's brief candle flickering outO
I speed from earthP
-
Can grief excuse indifferenceE
With groan or tearQ
Can deep remorse and penitenceE
Or anguish mitigate offenseE
With pang sincereR
-
Ah Tears can ne'er unlock the pastS
Which opens notT
And what is done is welded fastS
Through all eternity to lastS
Nor change one jotT
-
Whate'er may lie beyond the veilU
I calmly faceE
And sink as grievous tears bewailU
My faults and imperfections frailU
In death's embraceE
-
And as I think the matter o'erV
Pensive and sadW
While its shortcomings I deploreX
The fruits which my existence boreX
Were not all badW
-
From all which can rejoice or grieveY
I shortly goZ
And now in life's declining eveY
I wonder hope try to believeY
Soon I shall knowZ
-
My spirit flees as night enwrapsE
To its rewardA2
The earth recedes I feel it lapseE
I sink as dissolution snapsE
The silver cordA2
-
O Thou whose presence I can feelU
Each hour I liveB2
While passing through death's stern ordealU
Wilt Thou Thy mercy still revealU
And still forgiveC2
