I Think When I Stand In The Presence Of Death Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH

I think when I stand in the presence of DeathA
How futile is earthy endeavorB
If it be with the flight of the last labored breathA
The tongue has been silenced foreverB
-
For no message is flashed from the lustreless eyesC
When clos ed so languid and wearyD
And no voice from the darkness re echoes our criesC
In response to the agonized queryD
-
We gaze at the solemn mysterious shroudE
With a vague and insatiate yearningF
And perceive but the sombre exterior cloudE
With our vision of no discerningF
-
Not a whispering sound not a glimmer of lightG
From that shadowy strand uncertainH
But He who ordained the day and nightG
Framed also Death's silent curtainH
