Hidden Sorrows Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDC EFEFGGDC HIHIJJDC

For some the river of life would seemA
Free from the shallow the reef or barB
As they gently glide down the silvery streamA
With scarcely a ripple a lurch or jarB
But under the surface calm and fairC
Lurk the hidden snags and the secret careC
The waters are deepest where still and clearD
And the sternest anguish forbids a tearC
-
For others the pathway of life is strewnE
With many a thorn for each rose or budF
And their journey o'er mountain o'er moor and duneE
Can be plainly tracked by footprints of bloodF
But deeper still lies the hidden smartG
Of some secret sorrow which gnaws the heartG
And rankles under a surface clearD
For the sternest anguish forbids a tearC
-
But when the journey's end we seeH
At the bar of the Judge of quick and deadI
The cross which the one bore silentlyH
May outweigh his of the bloodstained treadI
The cross unseen and the cross of lightJ
May balance in that Judge's sightJ
O'er the heart that is breaking a smile may appearD
For the sternest anguish forbids a tearC
