Fame Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEFEGG HIHIJJ AKAKLM NOPOQQ

There is a cliff no matter whereA
Which softened by the agenciesB
Of rain exposure to the airA
And alternating thaw and freezeB
Most readily admits the edgeC
Of chisel or the sharpened wedgeC
-
The travelers while passing byD
Within its shade find welcome restE
And one of them mechanicallyF
As is a custom in the westE
Upon its surface stern and grayG
Carved out his name and went his wayG
-
Though inartistic and uncouthH
That effort of a novice handI
Exemplifies a striking truthH
And may Time's ravages withstandI
To be by future ages readJ
When years and centuries have fledJ
-
So on life's mighty thoroughfareA
The multitude of every classK
Leave no inscriptions chiseled whereA
Their transient footsteps chanced to passK
And waft to each succeeding ageL
No echoes from their pilgrimageM
-
Though many pass yet few recordN
Their names in characters sublimeO
By grand achievement work or wordP
Upon the monolith of TimeO
But few inscribe a lasting nameQ
On the eternal cliffs of FameQ
