My green aquarium of phantom fishA
Goggling in on me through the misty panesB
My rotting leaves and fields spongy with rainsB
My few clear quiet autumn days I wishA
-
I could leave all clearness and mistinessB
Sodden or goldenly crystal all too stillC
Yes and I too rot with the leaves that fillC
The hollows in the woods I am grown lessB
-
Than human listless aimless as the greenD
Idiot fishes of my aquariumE
Who loiter down their dim tunnels and comeE
And look at me and drift away nought seenD
-
Or understood but only glazedlyC
Reflected Upwards upwards through the shadowsB
Through the lush sponginess of deep sea meadowsB
Where hare lipped monsters batten let me plyC
-
Winged fins bursting this matrix dark to findF
Jewels and movement mintage of sunlightG
Scattered largely by the profuse windF
And gulfs of blue brightness too deep for sightG
-
Free newly born on roads of music and airH
Speeding and singing I shall seek the placeB
Where all the shining threads of water raceB
Drawn in green ropes and foamy meshes ThereH
-
On the red fretted ramparts of a towerI
Of coral rooted in the depths shall breakJ
An endless sequence of joy and speed and powerI
Green shall shatter to foam flake with white flakeJ
-
Shall create an instant's shining constellationK
Upon the blue and all the air shall beL
Full of a million wings that swift and freeL
Laugh in the sun all power and strong elationK
-
Yes I shall seek that reef which is beyondM
All isles however magically sleepingN
In tideless seas uncharted and unconnedM
Save by blind eyes beyond the laughter and weepingN
-
That brood like a cloud over the lands of menO
Movement passion of colour and pure wingsB
Curving to cut like knives these are the thingsB
I search for passion beyond the kenO
-
Of our foiled violences and more swiftM
Than any blow which man aims against timeP
The invulnerable motion that shall riftM
All dimness with the lightning of a rhymeP
-
Or note or colour And the body shall beL
Quick as the mind and will shall find releaseB
From bondage to brute things and joyouslyC
Soul will and body in the strength of triune peaceB
-
Shall live the perfect grace of power unwastedM
And love consummate marvellously blendingN
Passion and reverence in a single springN
Of quickening force till now never yet tastedM
-
But ever ceaselessly thirsted for shall crownQ
The new life with its ageless starry fireI
I go to seek that reef far down far downQ
Below the edge of everyday's desireI
-
Beyond the magical islands where of oldM
I was content dreaming to give the lieC
To misery They were all strong and boldM
That thither came and shall I dare to tryC
