By The Fire Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCABDEFFEGHHGHIJJIK LMNOPOQRSSRTUTU

We who are lovers sit by the fireA
Cradled warm 'twixt thought and willB
Sit and drowse like sleeping dogsC
In the equipoise of all desireA
Sit and listen to the stillB
Small hiss and whisper of green logsD
That burn away that burn awayE
With the sound of a far off falling streamF
Of threaded water blown to steamF
Grey ghost in the mountain world of greyE
Vapours blue as distance riseG
Between the hissing logs that showH
A glimpse of rosy heat belowH
And candles watch with tireless eyesG
While we sit drowsing here I knowH
Dimly that there exists a worldI
That there is time perhaps and spaceJ
Other and wider than this placeJ
Where at the fireside drowsily curledI
We hear the whisper and watch the flameK
Burn blinkless and inscrutableL
And then I know those other namesM
That through my brain from cell to cellN
Echo reverberated shoutO
Of waiters mournful along corridorsP
But nobody carries the orders outO
And the names dear friends your name and yoursQ
Evoke no sign But here I sitR
On the wide hearth and there are youS
That is enough and only trueS
The world and the friends that lived in itR
Are shadows you alone remainT
Real in this drowsing roomU
Full of the whispers of distant rainT
And candles staring into the gloomU
