A Guidebook to My Future FriendsA
I wish I had friendsA
Friends who would like me even when I am dramaticB
when I am too loud for quiet roomsC
when my jokes don't landD
when I don't know the cool songsE
when the references fly over my headF
and I am the only one still asking for the explanationG
I wish I had friends I could callH
with tears still fresh on my faceI
and somehow before the conversation endsA
the world would feel lighterJ
Friends who would tell me about their daysK
their heartbreaksL
their annoying coworkersM
their impossible dreamsN
until I remembered that everyone is carrying somethingO
and none of us are doing this aloneP
I wish I had friends who would laugh at my eye rollsQ
and roll their eyes when I laughR
Friends with a permanent dent beside me on the couchS
the same drinks in our hands every FridayT
the same stories told for the hundredth timeU
the same rantsQ
the same terrible decisionsQ
made with far too much confidenceQ
I wish I had friends who would embarrass themselvesQ
just so I would not have to feel embarrassed aloneP
and then laugh about it later right to my faceQ
as if carrying each other's awkward momentsQ
was written into the terms and conditions of friendshipV
I wish I had friends woven so naturally into my lifeW
that loving them would feel like breathingO
Like childhoodX
Like playdates stained with sand and dust and waterJ
Like knocking on a door and already knowing the answer would be yesQ
No planningO
No rehearsingO
No wondering if I belongedY
Just showing upZ
I wish I had friends I could call mineA2
People who show upZ
People who stayB2
People who speak up for me when I forget how to speak for myselfC2
People who dream ridiculous dreams beside meT
and promise that growing olderJ
does not mean growing apartD2
I wish I had friends my parents would loveE2
Friends whose names become ordinary in my houseQ
mentioned as casually as weather reportsQ
Friends who come over so oftenG
they stop feeling like guestsQ
Friends who pile into cars for nowhere in particularJ
with a carefully curated playlistD2
and windows rolled downF2
screaming lyrics like we wrote the songs ourselvesQ
I wish for Yulu rides under sleepy streetlightsQ
For late night drinksQ
For ugly cries that dissolve into laughterJ
For waking up with a headacheG2
wearing someone else's clothesQ
and realizing somewhere along the wayB2
they had started feeling like my ownP
I wish for memoriesQ
that become traditionsQ
traditions that become habitsQ
habits that become a lifeW
And sometimesQ
sitting alone todayB2
I can see it allH
The couchS
The playlistB2
The laughterJ
The drivesQ
The borrowed clothesQ
The hangoversQ
The yearsQ
A thousand ordinary momentsQ
stacked gently on top of one anotherJ
until they become something extraordinaryT
I can see the friends I haven't met yetB2
The ones who don't know they're being written aboutB2
The ones who don't knowH2
that somewhereI2
someone is already saving them a seat on the couchS
This is a guidebook to themJ2
And if we ever find each otherJ
I hope we stayB2
I hope we stay through new jobsQ
new citiesQ
new lovesQ
new versions of ourselvesQ
I hope we stay until our stories become impossible to separateB2
And I hopeK2
years from nowL2
when the playlist has changedB2
and the drinks are differentB2
and the laughter is softerJ
we still find our way back to one anotherJ
As if we had been friends all alongM2
