What ails the world the poet criedA
And why does death walk everywhereB
And why do tears fall anywhereB
And skies have clouds and souls have careB
Thus the poet sang and sighedA
-
For he would fain have all things gladC
All lives happy all hearts brightD
Not a day would end in nightD
Not a wrong would vex a rightD
And so he sang and he was sadC
-
Thro' his very grandest rhymesE
Moved a mournful monotoneF
Like a shadow eastward thrownF
From a sunset like a moanF
Tangled in a joy bell's chimesE
-
What ails the world he sang and askedG
And asked and sang but all in vainH
No answer came to any strainH
And no reply to his refrainH
The mystery moved 'round him maskedG
-
What ails the world An echo cameI
Ails the world The minstrel bandsJ
With famous or forgotten handsJ
Lift up their lyres in all the landsJ
And chant alike and ask the sameI
-
From him whose soul first soared in songK
A thousand thousand years awayL
To him who sang but yesterdayL
In dying or in deathless layL
What ails the world comes from the throngK
-
They fain would sing the world to restM
And so they chant in countless keysN
As many as the waves of seasN
And as the breathings of the breezeN
Yet even when they sing their bestM
-
When o'er the list'ning world there floatsO
Such melody as 'raptures menP
When all look up entranced and whenP
The song of fame floats forth e'en thenP
A discord creepeth through the notesO
-
Their sweetest harps have broken stringsQ
Their grandest accords have their jarsR
Like shadows on the light of starsR
And somehow something ever marsR
The songs the greatest minstrel singsQ
-
And so each song is incompleteS
And not a rhyme can ever roundT
Into the chords of perfect soundT
The tones of thought that e'er surroundT
The ways walked by the poet's feetS
-
What ails the world he sings and sighsU
No answer cometh to his cryV
He asks the earth and asks the skyV
The echoes of his song pass byV
Unanswered and the poet diesU
