Nature is but the outward vestibuleA
Which God has placed before an unseen shrineB
The Visible is but a fair bright valeC
That winds around the great InvisibleD
The Finite it is nothing but a smileE
That flashes from the face of InfiniteF
A smile with shadows on it and 'tis sadG
Men bask beneath the smile but oft forgetH
The loving Face that very smile concealsI
The Changeable is but the broidered robeJ
Enwrapped about the great UnchangeableE
The Audible is but an echo faintK
Low whispered from the far InaudibleE
This earth is but an humble acolyteL
A kneeling on the lowest altar stepM
Of this creation's temple at the MassN
Of Supernature just to ring the bellE
At Sanctus Sanctus Sanctus while the worldO
Prepares its heart for consecration's hourP
Nature is but the ever rustling veilE
Which God is wearing like the CarmeliteL
Who hides her face behind her virgin veilE
To keep it all unseen from mortal eyesQ
Yet by her vigils and her holy prayersR
And ceaseless sacrifices night and dayS
Shields souls from sin and many hearts from harmT
-
God hides in nature as a thought doth hideU
In humbly sounding words and as the thoughtV
Beats through the lowly word like pulse of heartW
That giveth life and keepeth life aliveX
So God thro' nature works on ev'ry soulE
For nature is His word so strangely writY
In heav'n in all the letters of the starsZ
Beneath the stars in alphabets of cloudsA2
And on the seas in syllables of wavesB2
And in the earth on all the leaves of flowersC2
And on the grasses and the stately treesD2
And on the rivers and the mournful rocksE2
The word is clearly written blest are theyS
Who read the word aright and understandF2
-
For God is everywhere and He doth findG2
In every atom which His hand hath madeH2
A shrine to hide His presence and revealE
His name love power to those who kneelE
In holy faith upon this bright belowE
And lift their eyes thro' all this mysteryI2
To catch the vision of the great beyondJ2
-
Yea nature is His shadow and how brightL
Must that face be which such a shadow castsK2
We walk within it for we live and moveL2
And have our being in His ev'rywhereI2
Why is God shy Why doth He hide HimselfM2
The tiniest grain of sand on ocean's shoreI2
Entemples Him the fragrance of the roseN2
Folds Him around as blessed incense foldsO2
The altars of His Christ yet some will walkP2
Along the temple's wondrous vestibuleE
And look on and admire yet enter notQ2
To find within the Presence and the LightL
Which sheds its rays on all that is withoutR2
And nature is His voice who list may hearI2
His name low murmured every everywhereI2
In songs of birds in rustle of the flowersC2
In swaying of the trees and on the seasD2
The blue lips of the wavelets tell the shipsS2
That come and go His holy holy nameT2
The winds or still or stormy breathe the sameT2
And some have ears and yet they will not hearI2
The soundless voice re echoed everywhereI2
And some have hearts that never are enthrilledR2
By all the grand Hosannahs nature singsU2
List Sanctus Sanctus Sanctus without pauseV2
Sounds sweetly out of all creation's heartR2
That hearts with power to love may echo backW2
Their Sanctus Sanctus Sanctus to the hymnX2
