Some reckon their age by years	A
Some measure their life by art	B
But some tell their days by the flow of their tears	C
And their lives by the moans of their heart	B

The dials of earth may show	D
The length not the depth of years	A
Few or many they come few or many they go	D
But time is best measured by tears	C

Ah not by the silver gray	E
That creeps thro' the sunny hair	F
And not by the scenes that we pass on our way	E
And not by the furrows the fingers of care	F

On forehead and face have made	G
Not so do we count our years	A
Not by the sun of the earth but the shade	G
Of our souls and the fall of our tears	C
	-
For the young are ofttimes old	H
Though their brows be bright and fair	F
While their blood beats warm their hearts are cold	H
O'er them the spring but winter is there	F
	-
And the old are ofttimes young	I
When their hair is thin and white	J
And they sing in age as in youth they sung	I
And they laugh for their cross was light	J
	-
But bead by bead I tell	K
The rosary of my years	A
From a cross to a cross they lead 'tis well	K
And they're blest with a blessing of tears	C
	-
Better a day of strife	L
Than a century of sleep	M
Give me instead of a long stream of life	L
The tempests and tears of the deep	M
	-
A thousand joys may foam	N
On the billows of all the years	A
But never the foam brings the lone back home	N
It reaches the haven through tears	C
