Some reckon their age by yearsA
Some measure their life by artB
But some tell their days by the flow of their tearsC
And their lives by the moans of their heartB
-
The dials of earth may showD
The length not the depth of yearsA
Few or many they come few or many they goD
But time is best measured by tearsC
-
Ah not by the silver grayE
That creeps thro' the sunny hairF
And not by the scenes that we pass on our wayE
And not by the furrows the fingers of careF
-
On forehead and face have madeG
Not so do we count our yearsA
Not by the sun of the earth but the shadeG
Of our souls and the fall of our tearsC
-
For the young are ofttimes oldH
Though their brows be bright and fairF
While their blood beats warm their hearts are coldH
O'er them the spring but winter is thereF
-
And the old are ofttimes youngI
When their hair is thin and whiteJ
And they sing in age as in youth they sungI
And they laugh for their cross was lightJ
-
But bead by bead I tellK
The rosary of my yearsA
From a cross to a cross they lead 'tis wellK
And they're blest with a blessing of tearsC
-
Better a day of strifeL
Than a century of sleepM
Give me instead of a long stream of lifeL
The tempests and tears of the deepM
-
A thousand joys may foamN
On the billows of all the yearsA
But never the foam brings the lone back homeN
It reaches the haven through tearsC
