The Poet Priest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBBCDDEFEGEGEHIHIJ JKGFLMNLOPOPEEQRRR

Not as of one whom multitudes admireA
I believe they call him greatB
They throng to hear him with a strange desireC
They silent come and waitB
And wonder when he opens wide the gateB
Of some strange inner temple where the fireC
Is lit on many altars of many dreamsD
They wait to catch the gleamsD
And then they sayE
In praiseful words 'Tis beautiful and grandF
And so his wayE
Is strewn with many flowers sweet and fairG
And people sayE
How happy he must be to win and wearG
Praise ev'ry dayE
And all the while he stands far out the crowdH
Strangely aloneI
Is it a Stole he wears or mayhap a shroudH
No matter which his spirit maketh moanI
And all the while a lonely lonesome senseJ
Creeps thro' his days all fame's incenseJ
Hath not the fragrance of his altar andK
He seemeth rather to kneel in lowly prayerG
Than lift his head aloft amid the GrandF
If all the world would kneel down at his feetL
And give acclaimM
He fain would say Oh No No NoN
The breath of fame is sweet but far more sweetL
Is the breath of Him who lives within my heartO
God's breath which e'en despite of me will creepP
Along the words of merely human artO
It cometh from some far off hidden DeepP
Far off and from so far awayE
It filleth night and dayE
Not as of one who ever ever caresQ
For earthly praises not as of such think thou of meR
And in the nights and days I'll meet with theeR
In Prayers and thou shalt meet with meR
