The shades of night were broodingA
O'er the sea the earth the skyB
The passing winds were wailingA
In a low unearthly sighB
The darkness gathered deeperC
For no starry light was shedD
And silence reigned unbrokenE
As the silence of the deadD
-
The wintry clouds were hangingA
From the starless sky so lowF
While 'neath them earth lay foldedG
In a winding shroud of snowF
'Twas cold 'twas dark 'twas drearyH
And the blast that swept alongI
The mountains hoarsely murmuredJ
A fierce discordant songI
-
And mortal men were restingA
From the turmoil of the dayK
And broken hearts were dreamingA
Of the friends long passed awayK
And saintly men were keepingA
Their vigils through the nightL
While angel spirits hovered nearM
Around their lonely lightL
-
And wicked men were sinningA
In the midnight banquet hallsN
Forgetful of that sentence tracedO
On proud Belshazzar's wallsN
On that night so dark and dismalP
Unillumed by faintest rayK
Might be seen the lonely pilgrimQ
Wending on his darksome wayK
-
Slow his steps for he was wearyH
And betimes he paused to restR
Then he rose and pressing onwardJ
Murmured lowly I must hasteO
In his hand he held a chapletO
And his lips were moved in prayerS
For the darkness and the silenceT
Seemed to whisper God was thereS
-
On the lonely pilgrim journeyedO
Nought disturbed him on his wayK
And his prayers he softly murmuredO
As the midnight stole awayK
Hark amid the stillness risesU
On his ears a distant strainV
Softly sounding now it ceasesW
Sweetly now it comes againX
-
In his path he paused to wonderC
While he listened to the soundO
On it came so sweet so pensiveY
'Mid the blast that howled aroundO
And the restless winds seemed soothedO
By that music gentle mildO
And they slept as when a motherC
Rocks to rest her cradled childO
-
Strange and sweet the calm that followedO
Stealing through the midnight airS
Strange and sweet the sounds that floatedO
Like an angel breathing thereS
From the sky the clouds were driftingA
Swiftly one by one awayK
And the sinless stars were sheddingA
Here and there a silver rayK
-
Why this change the pilgrim whisperedO
Whence that music whence its powerC
Earthly sounds are not so lovelyH
Angels love the midnight hourC
Bending o'er his staff he wonderedO
Loath to leave that sacred placeZ
I must hasten said he sadlyH
On he pressed with quickened paceZ
-
Just before him rose a mountainE
Dark its outline steep its sideO
Down its slopes that midnight musicA2
Seemed so soothingly to glideO
I will find it said the pilgrimQ
Though this mountain I must scaleB2
Scarcely said when on his visionE
Shone a distant light and paleB2
-
Glad he was and now he hastenedO
Brighter brighter grew the rayK
Stronger stronger swelled the musicA2
As he struggled on his wayK
Soon he gained the mountain summitO
Lo a church bursts on his viewC2
From the church that light was flowingA
And that gentle music tooC2
-
Near he came its door stood openE
Still he stood in awe and fearM
Shall I enter spot so holyH
Am I unforbidden hereD2
I will enter something bids meH
Saintly men are praying hereD2
Vigils sacred they are keepingA
'Tis their Matin song I hearD2
-
Softly noiselessly he glidedO
Through the portal on his sightO
Shone a vision bright strange thrillingA
Down he knelt 'twas Christmas nightO
Down in deepest adorationE
Knelt the lonely pilgrim thereS
Joy unearthly rapture holyH
Blended with his whispered prayerS
-
Wrapped his senses were in wonderC
On his soul an awe profoundO
As the vision burst upon himE2
'Mid sweet light and sweeter soundO
Is it real is it earthlyH
Is it all a fleeting dreamF2
Hark those choral voices ringingA
Lo those forms like angels seemF2
-
On his view there rose an altarC
Glittering 'mid a thousand beamsG2
Flowing from the burning tapersH2
In bright sparkling silver streamsG2
From unnumbered crystal vasesU
Rose and bloomed the fairest flowersH2
Shedding 'round their balmy fragranceT
'Mid the lights in sweetest showersH2
-
Rich and gorgeous was the altarC
Decked it was in purest whiteO
Mortal hands had not arrayed itO
Thus upon that Christmas nightO
Amid its lights and lovely flowersH2
The little tabernacle stoodO
Around it all was rich and goldenE
It alone was poor and rudeO
-
Hark Venite AdoremusH2
Round the golden altar soundsH2
See that band of angels kneelingA
Prostrate with their sparkling crownsH2
And the pilgrim looked and listenedO
And he saw the angels thereS
And their snow white wings were foldedO
As they bent in silent prayerS
-
Twelve they were bright rays of gloryH
Round their brows effulgent shoneI2
But a wreath of nobler beautyH
Seemed to grace and circle oneE
And he beauteous rose and openedO
Wide the tabernacle doorJ2
Hark Venite AdoremusH2
Rises bending they adoreJ2
-
Lo a sound of censers swingingA
Clouds of incense weave aroundO
The altar rich a silver mantleP
As the angels' hymns resoundO
List Venite AdoremusH2
Swells aloud in stronger strainV
And the angels swing the censersH2
And they prostrate bend againX
-
Rising now with voice of raptureC
Bursts aloud in thrilling toneI2
Gloria in Excelsis DeoO
Round the sacramental throneI2
Oh 'twas sweet 'twas sweet and charmingA
As the notes triumphant flowedO
Oh 'twas sweet while wreathes of incenseH2
Curled and countless tapers glowedO
-
Oh 'twas grand that hymn of gloryH
Earthly sounds cannot compareS
Oh 'twas grand it breath'd of heavenE
As the angels sung it thereS
Ravished by the strains ecstaticA2
Raptured by the vision grandO
Gazed the pilgrim on the altarC
Gazed upon the angel bandO
-
All was hushed the floating echoesH2
Of the hymn had died awayK
Vanished were the clouds of incenseH2
And the censers ceased to swayK
Lo their wings are gently wavingA
And the angels softly riseH2
Bending towards the tabernacleP
Worship beaming from their eyesH2
-
One last lowly genuflectionE
From their brows love burning shoneE
Ah they're going they've departedO
All but one the brightest oneE
Why remains he thought the pilgrimQ
Ah he rises beauteouslyP
Listen and the angel murmuredO
Sweetly Pilgrim hail to theeH
-
Come unto the golden altarC
I'm an angel banish fearM
Come unite in adorationE
With me for our God is hereD2
Come thy Jesus here reposesH2
Come He'll bless thy mortal sightO
Come adore the Infant SaviourD2
With me for 'tis Christmas nightO
-
Now approached the pilgrim tremblingA
Now beside the angel bentO
And the deepest blissful gladnessH2
With his fervent worship blentO
Pilgrim said the spirit softlyH
Thou hast seen bright angels hereD2
And hast heard our sacred anthemsH2
Filled with rapture filled with fearD2
-
We are twelve 'twas we who chantedO
First the Saviour's lowly birthK2
We who brought the joyful tidingsH2
Of His coming to the earthK2
We who sung unto the shepherdsH2
Watching on the mountain heightO
That the Word was made IncarnateO
For them on that blessed nightO
-
And since then we love to lingerD2
On that festal night on earthK2
And we leave our thrones of gloryH
Here to keep the Saviour's birthK2
Happy mortals happy mortalsH2
To night the angels would be menE
And they leave their thrones in heavenE
For the Crib of BethlehemL2
-
And the angel led the pilgrimQ
To the tabernacle doorD2
Lo an Infant there was sleepingA
And the angel said AdoreD2
He is sleeping yet he watchesH2
See that beam of love divineE
Pilgrim pay your worship holyH
To your Infant God and mineE
-
And the spirit slowly slowlyH
Closed the tabernacle doorD2
While the pilgrim lowly lowlyH
Bent in rapture to adoreD2
Pilgrim spoke the angel sweetlyH
I must bid thee my adieuO
Love oh love the Infant JesusH2
And he vanished from his viewO
-
-
-
All was silent silent silentO
Faded was the vision brightO
But the pilgrim long rememberedO
In his heart that Christmas nightO
