How swift they goA
Life's many yearsB
With their winds of woeA
And their storms of tearsC
And their darkest of nights whose shadowy slopesD
Are lit with the flashes of starriest hopesD
And their sunshiny days in whose calm heavens loomE
The clouds of the tempest the shadows of the gloomE
-
And ah we prayF
With a grief so drearF
That the years may stayF
When their graves are nearF
Tho' the brows of To morrows be radiant and brightG
With love and with beauty with life and with lightG
The dead hearts of Yesterdays cold on the bierF
To the hearts that survive them are evermore dearF
-
For the hearts so trueF
To each Old Year cleavesH
Tho' the hand of the NewF
Flowery garlands weavesH
But the flowers of the future tho' fragrant and fairF
With the past's withered leaflets may never compareF
For dear is each dead leaf and dearer each thornI
In the wreaths which the brows of our past years have wornI
-
Yea men will clingJ
With a love to the lastK
And wildly flingJ
Their arms round their pastK
As the vine that clings to the oak that fallsL
As the ivy twines round the crumbled wallsL
For the dust of the past some hearts higher prizeM
Than the stars that flash out from the future's bright skiesM
-
And why not soA
The old Old YearsB
They knew and they knowA
All our hopes and fearsB
We walked by their side and we told them each griefN
And they kissed off our tears while they whispered reliefN
And the stories of hearts that may not be revealedO
In the hearts of the dead years are buried and sealedO
-
Let the New Year singJ
At the Old Year's graveP
Will the New Year bringJ
What the Old Year gaveP
Ah the Stranger Year trips over the snowsQ
And his brow is wreathed with many a roseQ
But how many thorns do the roses concealR
Which the roses when withered shall so soon revealR
-
Let the New Year smileS
When the Old Year diesM
In how short a whileS
Shall the smiles be sighsM
Yea Stranger Year thou hast many a charmT
And thy face is fair and thy greeting warmU
But dearer than thou in his shroud of snowsQ
Is the furrowed face of the Year that goesQ
-
Yea bright New YearF
O'er all the earthV
With song and cheerF
They will hail thy birthV
They will trust thy words in a single hourF
They will love thy face they will laud thy powerF
For the New has charms which the Old has notW
And the Stranger's face makes the Friend's forgotW
