First champion of the CrucifiedA
Who when the fight beganB
Between the Church and worldly prideA
So nobly fought so nobly diedA
The foremost in the vanB
While rallied to your valiant sideA
The red robed martyr bandC
To night with glad and high acclaimD
We venerate thy saintly nameD
Accept Saint Stephen to thy praiseE
And glory these our lowly laysE
-
The chosen twelve with chrismed handC
And burning zeal withinF
Led forth their small yet fearless bandC
On Pentecost and took their standC
Against the world and sinF
While rang aloud the battle cryG
The hated Christians all must dieG
As died the Nazarene beforeH
The God they believe in and adoreH
Yet Stephen's heart quailed not with fearI
At persecution's cryG
But loving as he did the causeJ
Of Jesus and His faith and lawsK
Prepared himself to dieG
-
He faced his foes with burning zealL
Such zeal as only saints can feelL
He told them how the Lord had stoodM
Within their midst so great and goodM
How he had through Judea trodN
How wonders marked his way the GodN
How he had cured the blind the lameD
The deaf the palsied and the maimedO
And how with awful wondrous mightP
He raised the dead to life and lightP
And how his people knew Him notQ
Had eyes and still had seen Him notQ
Had ears and still had heard Him notQ
Had hearts and comprehended notQ
Then said he pointing to the rightP
Where darkly rose Golgotha's heightP
There have ye slain the Holy OneR
Your Saviour and God's only SonR
-
They gnashed their teeth in raging ireS
Those dark and cruel menT
They vowed a vengeance deep and direS
Against Saint Stephen thenT
Yet he was calm a radiant lightP
Around his forehead gleamedU
He raised his eyes a wondrous sightP
He saw so grand it was and brightP
His soul was filled with such delightP
That he an angel seemedU
Then spoke the Saint A vision grandC
Bursts on me from aboveV
The doors of heaven open standC
And at the Father's own right handC
I see the Lord I loveV
-
Away with him the rabble cryG
With swelling rage and hateW
But Stephen still gazed on the skyG
His heart was with his Lord on highG
He heeded not his fateW
-
The gathering crowd in fury wildX
Rush on the 'raptured SaintY
And seize their victim mute and mildX
Who like his master though reviledX
Still uttered no complaintY
-
With angry shouts they rend the airZ
They drag him to the city gateW
They bind his hands and feet and thereZ
While whispered he for them a prayerZ
The martyr meets his fateW
-
First fearless witness to his beliefA2
In Jesus CrucifiedA
The red robed martyrs' noble chiefA2
Thus for his Master diedA
And to the end of time his nameD
Our Holy Church shall e'er proclaimD
And with a mother's pride shall tellB2
How her great proto martyr fellB2
