I walk down the Valley of SilenceA
Down the dim voiceless valley aloneB
And I hear not the fall of a footstepC
Around me save God's and my ownB
And the hush of my heart is as holyD
As hovers where angels have flownB
-
Long ago was I weary of voicesE
Whose music my heart could not winF
Long ago was I weary of noisesG
That fretted my soul with their dinF
Long ago was I weary of placesE
Where I met but the human and sinF
-
I walked in the world with the worldlyD
I craved what the world never gaveH
And I said In the world each IdealI
That shines like a star on life's waveH
Is wrecked on the shores of the RealI
And sleeps like a dream in a graveH
-
And still did I pine for the PerfectJ
And still found the False with the TrueK
I sought 'mid the Human for HeavenL
But caught a mere glimpse of its BlueK
And I wept when the clouds of the MortalM
Veiled even that glimpse from my viewK
-
And I toiled on heart tired of the HumanL
And I moaned 'mid the mazes of menN
Till I knelt long ago at an altarO
And I heard a voice call me Since thenN
I walk down the Valley of SilenceA
That lies far beyond mortal kenN
-
Do you ask what I found in the ValleyD
'Tis my Trysting Place with the DivineP
And I fell at the feet of the HolyD
And above me a voice said Be mineP
And there arose from the depths of my spiritQ
An echo My heart shall be ThineP
-
Do you ask how I live in the ValleyD
I weep and I dream and I prayR
But my tears are as sweet as the dewdropsA
That fall on the roses in MayR
And my prayer like a perfume from censersA
Ascendeth to God night and dayR
-
In the hush of the Valley of SilenceA
I dream all the songs that I singS
And the music floats down the dim ValleyD
Till each finds a word for a wingS
That to hearts like the Dove of the DelugeT
A message of Peace they may bringS
-
But far on the deep there are billowsA
That never shall break on the beachU
And I have heard songs in the SilenceA
That never shall float into speechU
And I have had dreams in the ValleyD
Too lofty for language to reachU
-
And I have seen Thoughts in the ValleyD
Ah me how my spirit was stirredV
And they wear holy veils on their facesA
Their footsteps can scarcely be heardV
They pass through the Valley like virginsA
Too pure for the touch of a wordV
-
Do you ask me the place of the ValleyD
Ye hearts that are harrowed by CareW
It lieth afar between mountainsA
And God and His angels are thereW
And one is the dark mount of SorrowX
And one the bright mountain of PrayerW
