Far from where the roses restA
Round the altar and the aisleB
Which I loved of all the bestA
I have come to rest awhileB
By the ever restless seaC
Will its waves give rest to meC
-
But it is so hard to partD
With my roses Do they knowE
Who knows but each has a heartD
How it grieves my heart to goE
Roses will the restless seaC
Bring as ye a rest for meC
-
Ye were sweet and still and calmF
Roses red and roses whiteG
And ye sang a soundless psalmH
For me in the day and nightG
Roses will the restless seaC
Sing as sweet as ye for meC
-
Just a hundred feet awayI
Seaward flows and ebbs the tideJ
And the wavelets blue and grayI
Moan and white sails windward glideJ
O'er the ever restless seaC
From me far and peacefullyC
-
And as many feet awayI
Landward rise the moss veiled treesK
And they wail the while they swayI
In the sad November breezeK
Echoes in the sighing seaC
To me near and mournfullyC
-
And beside me sleep the deadL
In the consecrated groundM
Blessed crosses o'er each headL
O'er them all the Requiem soundM
Chanted by the moaning seaC
Echoed by each moss veiled treeC
-
Roses will you miss my faceN
Do you know that I have goneO
From your fair and restful placeN
Far away where moveth onP
Night and day the restless seaC
But I saw eternityC
-
In your faces Roses sweetQ
Ye were but the virgin veilsR
Hiding Him whose holy feetQ
Walked the waves whose very wailsR
Bring to me from GalileeC
Rest across the restless seaC
-
And who knows mayhap some waveS
From His footstep long agoE
With the blessing which He gaveS
After ages ebb and flowE
Cometh in from yonder seaC
With a blessing sweet for meC
-
Just last night I watched the deepT
And it shone as shines a shrineU
Vigils such I often keepT
And the stars did sweetly shineU
O'er the altar of the seaC
So they shone in GalileeC
-
Roses round the shrine and aisleC
Which of all I loved the bestA
I have gone to rest awhileC
Where the wavelets never restA
Ye are dearer far to meC
Than the ever restless seaC
-
I will come to you in dreamsV
In the day and in the nightG
When the sun's or starlight's gleamsV
Robe you in your red or whiteG
Roses will you dream of meC
By the ever restless seaC
