One idle dayA
A mile or so of sunlit waves off shoreB
In a breezeless bayA
We listless layA
Our boat a dream of rest on the still seaC
And we were fourB
-
The wind had diedD
That all day long sang songs unto the deepE
It was eventideD
And far and wideD
Sweet silence crept thro' the rifts of soundD
With spells of sleepE
-
Our gray sail castD
The only cloud that flecked the foamless seaC
And weary at lastD
Beside the mastD
One fell to slumber with a dreamy faceF
And we were threeC
-
No ebb no flowG
No sound no stir in the wide wondrous calmH
In the sunset's glowG
The shore shelved lowG
And snow white from far ridges screened with shadeD
Of drooping palmH
-
Our hearts were hushedD
All light seemed melting into boundless blueI
But the west was flushedD
Where sunset blushedD
Thro' clouds of roses when another sleptD
And we were twoI
-
How still the airJ
Not e'en a sea bird o'er us waveward flewI
Peace rested thereJ
Light everywhereJ
Nay Light some shadows fell on that fair sceneK
And we are twoI
-
Some shadows WhereJ
No matter where all shadows are not seenK
For clouds of careJ
To skies all fairJ
Will sudden rise as tears to shining eyesL
And dim their sheenK
-
We spake no wordD
Tho' each I ween did hear the other's soulM
Not a wavelet stirredD
And yet we heardD
The loneliest music of the weariest wavesN
That ever rollM
-
Yea Peace you swayedD
Your sceptre jeweled with the evening lightD
And then you saidD
Here falls no shadeD
Here floats no sound and all the seas and skiesL
Sleep calm and brightD
-
Nay Peace not soG
The wildest waves may feel thy sceptre's spellO
And fear to flowG
But to and froG
Beyond their reach lone waves on troubled seasP
Will sink and swellO
-
No word e'en yetD
Were our eyes speaking while they watched the skyQ
And in the sunsetD
Infinite regretD
Swept sighing from the skies into our soulsR
I wonder whyQ
-
A half hour passedD
'Twas more than half an age 'tis ever thusS
Words came at lastD
Fluttering and fastD
As shadows veiling sunsets in the soulsR
Of each of usS
-
The noiseless nightD
Sped flitting like a ghost where waves of blueI
Lost all their lightD
As lips once brightD
Whence smiles have fled we or the wavelets sighedD
And we were twoI
-
The day had goneT
And on the dim high altar of the darkU
Stars one by oneV
Far faintly shoneW
The moonlight trembled like a mother's smileX
Upon our barkU
-
We softly spokeY
The waves seemed listening on the lonely seaC
The winds awokeY
Our whispers brokeY
The spell of silence and two eyes unclosedD
And we were threeC
-
The breeze blows fairJ
He said the waking waves set towards the shoreB
The long brown hairJ
Of the other thereJ
Who slumbered near the mast with dreamy faceF
Stirred we were fourB
-
That starry nightD
A mile or so of shadows from the shoreB
Two faces brightD
With laughter lightD
Shone on two souls like stars that shine on shrinesZ
And we were fourB
-
Over the reachA2
Of dazzling waves our boat like wild bird flewI
We reached the beachA2
Nor song nor speechA2
Shall ever tell our sacramental thoughtD
When we were twoI
