Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDD EFEFGG BHBHIJ KLKLCC MNMNOO PQPQRR DHDHSS TUFUIJ VWVWDD

Written after the yellow fever epidemic ofA
-
-
-
Purer than thy own white snowB
Nobler than thy mountains' heightC
Deeper than the ocean's flowB
Stronger than thy own proud mightC
O Northland to thy sister landD
Was late thy mercy's generous deed and grandD
-
Nigh twice ten years the sword was sheathedE
Its mist of green o'er battle plainF
For nigh two decades Spring had breathedE
And yet the crimson life blood stainF
From passive swards had never paledG
Nor fields where all were brave and some had failedG
-
Between the Northland bride of snowB
And Southland brightest sun's fair brideH
Swept deepening ever in its flowB
The stormy wake in war's dark tideH
No hand might clasp across the tearsI
And blood and anguish of four deathless yearsJ
-
When Summer like a rose in bloomK
Had blossomed from the bud of SpringL
Oh who could deem the dews of doomK
Upon the blushing lips could clingL
And who could believe its fragrant lightC
Would e'er be freighted with the breath of blightC
-
Yet o'er the Southland crept the spellM
That e'en from out its brightness spreadN
And prostrate powerless she fellM
Rachel like amid her deadN
Her bravest fairest purest bestO
The waiting grave would welcome as its guestO
-
The Northland strong in love and greatP
Forgot the stormy days of strifeQ
Forgot that souls with dreams of hateP
Or unforgiveness e'er were rifeQ
Forgotten was each thought and hushedR
Save she was generous and her foe was crushedR
-
No hand might clasp from land to landD
Yea there was one to bridge the tideH
For at the touch of Mercy's handD
The North and South stood side by sideH
The Bride of Snow the Bride of SunS
In Charity's espousals are made oneS
-
Thou givest back my sons againT
The Southland to the Northland criesU
For all my dead on battle plainF
Thou biddest my dying now upriseU
I still my sobs I cease my tearsI
And thou hast recompensed my anguished yearsJ
-
Blessings on thine every waveV
Blessings on thine every shoreW
Blessings that from sorrow saveV
Blessings giving more and moreW
For all thou gavest thy sister landD
O Northland in thy generous deed and grandD
