I sit to night by the firelightA
And I look at the glowing flameB
And I see in the bright red flashesC
A Heart a Face and a NameB
-
How often have I seen picturesD
Framed in the firelight's blazeE
Of hearts of names and of facesF
And scenes of remembered daysE
-
How often have I found poemsG
In the crimson of the coalsH
And the swaying flames of the firelightA
Unrolled such golden scrollsH
-
And my eyes they were proud to read themI
In letters of living flameB
But to night in the fire I see onlyJ
One Heart one Face and one NameB
-
But where are the olden picturesD
And where are the olden dreamsK
Has a change come over my visionL
Or over the fire's bright gleamsK
-
Not over my vision surelyJ
My eyes they are still the sameB
That used to find in the firelightA
So many a face and nameB
-
Not over the firelight eitherM
No change in the coals or blazeE
That flicker and flash as ruddyA
To night as in other daysE
-
But there must be a change I feel itA
To night not an old picture cameB
The fire's bright flames only paintedA
One Heart one Face and one NameB
-
Three pictures No only one pictureM
The Face belongs to the NameB
And the Name names the Heart that is throbbingN
Just back of the beautiful flameB
-
Who said it I wonder All facesF
Must fade in the light of but oneL
The soul like the earth may have manyA
Horizons but only one sunL
-
Who dreamt it Did I If I dreamt itA
'Tis true every name passes byO
Save one the sun wears many cloudletsF
Of gold but has only one skyO
-
And out of the flames have they fadedA
The hearts and the faces of yoreP
Have they sunk 'neath the gray of the ashesF
To rise to my vision no moreP
-
Yes surely or else I would see themI
To night just as bright as of oldA
In the white of the coal's silver flashesF
In the red of the restless flames' goldA
-
Do you say I am fickle and faithlessF
Else why are the old pictures goneQ
And why should the visions of manyA
Melt into the vision of oneL
-
Nay list to the voice of the HeavensF
One Eternal alone reigns aboveR
Is it true and all else are but idolsF
So the heart can have only one loveR
-
Only one all the rest are but idolsF
That fall from their shrines soon or lateA
When the Love that is Lord of the templeS
Comes with sceptre and crown to the gateA
-
To be faithless oft means to be faithfulS
To be false often means to be trueT
The vale that loves clouds that are goldenL
Forgets them for skies that are blueT
-
To forget often means to rememberM
What we had forgotten too longU
The fragrance is not the bright flowerM
The echo is not the sweet songU
-
Am I dreaming No there is the firelightA
Gaze I ever so long all the sameB
I only can see in its glowingN
A Heart a Face and a NameB
-
Farewell all ye hearts names and facesF
Only ashes now under the blazeF
Ye never again will smile on meA
For I'm touching the end of my daysF
-
And the beautiful fading firelightA
Paints now with a pencil of flameB
Three pictures yet only one pictureM
A Heart a Face and a NameB
