And Happy Happy HappyA
Rang the bells of all the hoursB
Shyly Shyly ShylyA
Looked and listened all the flowersB
They were wakened from their slumbersB
By the footsteps of the fairC
And they smiled in their awakingD
On the faces gathered thereC
-
Brightly Brightly BrightlyA
Looked the overhanging treesB
For beneath their bending branchesB
Floated tresses in the breezeB
And they wondered who had wanderedE
With such voices and so gayD
And their leaflets seemed to whisperF
To each other Who are theyD
-
They were just like little childrenG
Not a sorrow's shade was thereC
And Merry Merry MerryA
Rang their laughter thro' the airC
There was not a brow grief darkenedH
Was there there a heart in painI
But Happy Happy HappyA
Came the happy bells' refrainI
-
When the stately trees were bendingD
O'er a simple quiet homeJ
That looked humble as an altarF
Nestling 'neath a lofty domeJ
Thither went they gaily gailyA
Where their coming was a joyK
Just to pass away togetherF
One long day without alloyK
-
Slowly Slowly SlowlyA
Melted morning's mist awayD
Till the sun in all its splendorF
Lit the borders of the bayD
Gladly Gladly GladlyA
Glanced the waters that were grayD
While the wavelets whispered WelcomeL
To us all that happy dayD
-
And Happy Happy HappyA
Rang the bell in every heartM
And it chimed All day let no oneG
Think that ye shall ever partM
Go and sip from every momentN
Sweets to perfume many yearsB
Keep your feast and be too happyA
To have thought of any tearsB
-
There was song with one's soul in itO
And the happy hearts grew stillP
While they leaned upon the musicD
Like fair lilies o'er the rillP
Till the notes had softly floatedQ
Into silent seas awayD
O'er the wavelets where they listenedH
While they rocked upon the bayD
-
And Dreamy Dreamy DreamyA
When the song's sweet life was o'erF
Drooped the eyes that will rememberF
All its echoes evermoreR
And Stilly Stilly StillyP
Beat the hearts of some I weenG
That can see the unseen mysteryA
Which a song may strive to screenG
-
Then Gaily Gaily GailyA
Rang the laughter everywhereC
From the lips that seemed too lightsomeA
For the sigh of any careC
And the dance went Merry MerryA
Whilst the feet that tripped alongD
Bore the hearts that were as happyA
As a wild bird's happy songD
-
And sweet words with smiles upon themA
Joy winged flitted to and froS
Flushing every face they met withT
With the glory of their glowS
Not a brow with cloud upon itO
Not an eye that seemed to knowS
What a tear is not a bosomA
That had ever nursed a woeS
-
And how Swiftly Swiftly SwiftlyA
Like the ripples of a streamA
Did the bright hours chase each otherF
Till it all seemed like a dreamA
Till it seemed as if no NeverF
Ever in this world had beenG
To o'ercloud the brief ForeverF
Shining o'er the happy sceneG
-
Dimly dimly fell the shadowsB
Of the tranquil eventideO
But the sound of dance and laughterF
Would not die and had not diedO
And still Happy Happy HappyA
Rang the voiceless vesper bellsB
O'er the hearts that were too happyA
To remember earth's farewellsB
-
Came the night hours faster fasterF
Rose the laughter and the danceB
And the eyes that should look wearyA
Shone the brighter in their glanceB
And they stole from every minuteO
What no other day could lendO
They were happy happy happyA
But the feast must have an endO
-
Children come the words were cruelP
'Twas the death sigh of the feastO
And they came still merry merryA
At the bidding of the priestO
Who had heard the joy bells ringingD
Round him all the summer dayO
Happy Happy Happy HappyA
Did he hear an angel sayO
-
Happy happy still more happyA
Yea the happiest are theyO
I was moving 'mid the childrenG
By the borders of the bayO
And I bring to God no recordO
Of a single sin this dayO
-
Happy Happy HappyA
When your life seems lone and longD
You will hear that feast's bells ringingD
Far and faintly thro' my songD
