Gather the sacred dustA
Of the warriors tried and trueB
Who bore the flag of a Nation's trustA
And fell in a cause though lost still justA
And died for me and youB
-
Gather them one and allC
From the private to the chiefD
Come they from hovel or princely hallC
They fell for us and for them should fallC
The tears of a Nation's griefD
-
Gather the corpses strewnE
O'er many a battle plainF
From many a grave that lies so loneG
Without a name and without a stoneG
Gather the Southern slainF
-
We care not whence they cameH
Dear in their lifeless clayI
Whether unknown or known to fameH
Their cause and country still the sameH
They died and wore the GrayI
-
Wherever the brave have diedJ
They should not rest apartK
Living they struggled side by sideJ
Why should the hand of Death divideJ
A single heart from heartK
-
Gather their scattered clayI
Wherever it may restL
Just as they marched to the bloody frayI
Just as they fell on the battle dayI
Bury them breast to breastL
-
The foeman need not dreadM
This gathering of the braveN
Without sword or flag and with soundless treadM
We muster once more our deathless deadM
Out of each lonely graveN
-
The foeman need not frownO
They all are powerless nowP
We gather them here and we lay them downO
And tears and prayers are the only crownO
We bring to wreathe each browP
-
And the dead thus meet the deadM
While the living o'er them weepQ
And the men by Lee and Stonewall ledM
And the hearts that once together bledM
Together still shall sleepQ
