A baby played with the surplice sleeveA
Of a gentle priest while in accents lowB
The sponsors murmured the grand I believeA
And the priest bade the mystic waters to flowB
In the name of the Father and the SonC
And Holy Spirit Three in OneC
-
Spotless as a lily's leafD
Whiter than the Christmas snowB
Not a sign of sin or griefD
And the babe laughed sweet and lowB
-
A smile flitted over the baby's faceE
Or was it the gleam of its angel's wingF
Just passing then and leaving a traceE
Of its presence as it soared to singF
A hymn when words and waters winG
To grace and life a child of sinG
-
Not an outward sign or tokenC
That a child was saved from woeB
But the bonds of sin were brokenC
And the babe laughed sweet and lowB
-
A cloud rose up to the mother's eyesH
And out of the cloud grief's rain fell fastI
Came the baby's smiles and the mother's sighsH
Out of the future or the pastI
Ah gleam and gloom must ever meetJ
And gall must mingle with the sweetJ
-
Yea upon the baby's laughterK
Trickled tears 'tis ever soB
Mothers dread the dark hereafterK
But the babe laughed sweet and lowB
-
And the years like waves broke on the shoreL
Of the mother's heart and her baby's lifeM
But her lone heart drifted away beforeL
Her little boy knew an hour of strifeM
Drifted away on a Summer's eveA
Ere the orphaned child knew how to grieveA
-
Her humble grave was gently madeN
Where roses bloomed in Summer's glowB
The wild birds sang where her heart was laidN
And her boy laughed sweet and lowB
-
He drifted away from his mother's graveO
Like a fragile flower on a great stream's tideP
Till he heard the moan of the mighty waveO
That welcomed the stream to the ocean wideP
Out from the shore and over the deepQ
He sailed away and learned to weepQ
-
Furrowed grew the face once fairR
Under storms of human woeB
Silvered grew the dark brown hairR
And he wailed so sad and lowB
-
The years swept on as erst they sweptS
Bright wavelets once dark billows nowT
Wherever he sailed he ever weptS
A cloud hung over the darkened browT
Over the deep and into the darkU
But no one knew where sank his barkU
-
Wild roses watched his mother's tombV
The world still laughed 'tis ever soB
God only knows the baby's doomV
That laughed so sweet and lowB
