To the Children of Mary of the Cathedral of MobileA
-
-
-
In the mystical dim of the templeA
In the dream haunted dim of the dayB
The sunlight spoke soft to the shadowsC
And said With my gold and your grayB
Let us meet at the shrine of the VirginD
And ere her fair feast pass awayB
Let us weave there a mantle of gloryE
To deck the last evening of MayB
-
The tapers were lit on the altarF
With garlands of lilies betweenG
And the steps leading up to the statueH
Flashed bright with the roses' red sheenG
The sun gleams came down from the heavensI
Like angels to hallow the sceneG
And they seemed to kneel down with the shadowsC
That crept to the shrine of the QueenG
-
The singers their hearts in their voicesJ
Had chanted the anthems of oldK
And the last trembling wave of the VespersJ
On the far shores of silence had rolledK
And there at the Queen Virgin's altarF
The sun wove the mantle of goldK
While the hands of the twilight were weavingL
A fringe for the flash of each foldK
-
And wavelessly in the deep silenceJ
Three banners hung peaceful and lowM
They bore the bright blue of the heavensJ
They wore the pure white of the snowM
And beneath them fair children were kneelingL
Whose faces with graces aglowM
Seemed sinless in land that is sinfulA
And woeless in life full of woeM
-
Their heads wore the veil of the lilyE
Their brows wore the wreath of the roseJ
And their hearts like their flutterless bannersJ
Were stilled in a holy reposeJ
Their shadowless eyes were upliftedN
Whose glad gaze would never discloseJ
That from eyes that are most like the heavensJ
The dark rain of tears soonest flowsJ
-
The banners were borne to the railingL
Beneath them a group from each bandO
And they bent their bright folds for the blessingL
That fell from the priest's lifted handO
And he signed the three fair silken standardsJ
With a sign never foe could withstandO
What stirred them The breeze of the eveningL
Or a breath from the far angel landO
-
Then came two by two to the altarF
The young and the pure and the fairP
Their faces the mirror of HeavenQ
Their hands folded meekly in prayerP
They came for a simple blue ribbonQ
For love of Christ's Mother to wearP
And I believe with the Children of MaryE
The Angels of Mary were thereP
-
Ah faith simple faith of the childrenQ
You still shame the faith of the oldK
Ah love simple love of the littleA
You still warm the love of the coldK
And the beautiful God who is wanderingL
Far out in the world's dreary woldK
Finds a home in the hearts of the childrenQ
And a rest with the lambs of the foldK
-
Swept a voice was it wafted from HeavenQ
Heard you ever the sea when it singsJ
Where it sleeps on the shore in the night timeR
Heard you ever the hymns the breeze bringsJ
From the hearts of a thousand bright summersJ
Heard you ever the bird when she springsJ
To the clouds till she seems to be onlyE
A song of a shadow on wingsJ
-
Came a voice and an Ave MariaS
Rose out of a heart rapture thrilledT
And in the embrace of its musicU
The souls of a thousand lay stilledT
A voice with the tones of an angelA
Never flower such a sweetness distilledT
It faded away but the templeA
With its perfume of worship was filledT
-
Then back to the Queen Virgin's altarF
The white veils swept on two by twoH
And the holiest halo of heavenQ
Flashed out from the ribbons of blueH
And they laid down the wreaths of the rosesJ
Whose hearts were as pure as their hueH
Ah they to the Christ are the truestV
Whose loves to the Mother are trueH
-
And thus in the dim of the templeA
In the dream haunted dim of the dayB
The Angels and Children of MaryE
Met ere their Queen's Feast passed awayB
Where the sun gleams knelt down with the shadowsJ
And wove with their gold and their grayB
A mantle of grace and of gloryE
For the last lovely evening of MayB
