What has been will beA
'Tis the under law of lifeB
'Tis the song of sky and seaA
To the key of calm and strifeB
-
For guard we as we mayC
What is to be will beA
The dark must fold each dayC
The shore must gird each seaA
-
All things are ruled by lawD
'Tis only in man's willE
You meet a feeble flawD
But fate is weaving stillE
-
The web and woof of lifeB
With hands that have no heartsF
Thro' calmness and thro' strifeB
Despite all human artsF
-
For fate is master hereG
He laughs at human wilesH
He sceptres every tearI
And fetters any smilesH
-
What is to be will beA
We cannot help ourselvesJ
The waves ask not the seaA
Where lies the shore that shelvesJ
-
The law is coldest steelK
We live beneath its swayC
It cares not what we feelK
And so pass night and dayC
-
And sometimes we may thinkL
This cannot will not beA
Some waves must rise some sinkL
Out on the midnight seaA
-
And we are weak as wavesM
That sink upon the shoreN
We go down into gravesM
Fate chants the nevermoreN
-
Cometh a voice Kneel downO
'Tis God's there is no fateP
He giveth the Cross and CrownO
He opens the jeweled gateP
-
He watcheth with such eyesQ
As only mothers ownR
Sweet Father in the skiesQ
Ye call us to a throneR
-
There is no fate God's loveS
Is law beneath each lawD
And law all laws aboveS
Fore'er without a flawD
