At last the dream of youthA
Stands fair and bright before meB
The sunshine of the home of truthA
Falls tremulously o'er meB
-
And tower and spire and lofty domeC
In brightest skies are gleamingD
Walk I to day the ways of RomeC
Or am I only dreamingD
-
No 'tis no dream my very eyesE
Gaze on the hill tops sevenF
Where crosses rise and kiss the skiesE
And grandly point to HeavenF
-
Gray ruins loom on ev'ry sideG
Each stone an age's storyB
They seem the very ghosts of prideG
That watch the grave of gloryB
-
There senates sat whose sceptre soughtH
An empire without limitI
There grandeur dreamed its dream and thoughtH
That death would never dim itJ
-
There rulers reigned yon heap of stonesK
Was once their gorgeous palaceL
Beside them now on altar thronesL
The priests lift up the chaliceL
-
There legions marched with bucklers brightM
And lances lifted o'er themN
While flags like eagles plumed for flightM
Unfurled their wings before themN
-
There poets sang whose deathless nameO
Is linked to deathless versesL
There heroes hushed with shouts of fameO
Their trampled victim's cursesL
-
There marched the warriors back to homeC
Beneath yon crumbling portalP
And placed upon the brow of RomeC
The proud crown of immortalP
-
There soldiers stood with armor onQ
In steel clad ranks and serriedM
The while their red swords flashed uponQ
The slaves whose rights they buriedM
-
Here pagan pride with sceptre stoodM
And fame would not forsake itM
Until a simple cross of woodM
Came from the East to break itM
-
That Rome is dead here is the graveR
Dead glory rises neverS
And countless crosses o'er it waveR
And will wave on foreverS
-
Beyond the Tiber gleams a domeC
Above the hill tops sevenF
It arches o'er the world from RomeC
And leads the world to HeavenF
-
-
DecemberS
