In Memory Of My Brother Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAAB CDCCCD EFEGEF HIHHHI EDEEEED

Young as the youngest who donned the GrayA
True as the truest that wore itB
Brave as the bravest he marched awayA
Hot tears on the cheeks of his mother layA
Triumphant waved our flag one dayA
He fell in the front before itB
-
Firm as the firmest where duty ledC
He hurried without a falterD
Bold as the boldest he fought and bledC
And the day was won but the field was redC
And the blood of his fresh young heart was shedC
On his country's hallowed altarD
-
On the trampled breast of the battle plainE
Where the foremost ranks had wrestledF
On his pale pure face not a mark of painE
His mother dreams they will meet againG
The fairest form amid all the slainE
Like a child asleep he nestledF
-
In the solemn shades of the wood that sweptH
The field where his comrades found himI
They buried him there and the big tears creptH
Into strong men's eyes that had seldom weptH
His mother God pity her smiled and sleptH
Dreaming her arms were around himI
-
A grave in the woods with the grass o'ergrownE
A grave in the heart of his motherD
His clay in the one lies lifeless and loneE
There is not a name there is not a stoneE
And only the voice of the winds maketh moanE
O'er the grave where never a flower is strewnE
But his memory lives in the otherD
