Father Keeler died February in Mobile AlaA
Inscribed to his sisterB

-
Sweet Christ let him live ah we need his lifeC
And woe to us if he goesD
Oh his life is beautiful sweet and fairE
Like a holy hymn and the stillest prayerE
Let him linger to help us in the strifeC
On earth with our sins and woesD
-
'Twas the cry of thousands who loved him soF
The Angel of Death said No oh noF
He was passing away and none might saveG
The virgin priest from a spotless graveG
-
O God spare his life we plead and prayH
He taught us to love You soF
So so much his life is so sweet and fairE
A still still song and a holy prayerE
He is our Father oh let him stayH
He gone to whom shall we goF
-
'Twas the wail of thousands who loved him soF
But the Angel of Death murmured low No noF
And the voice of his angel from far awayH
Sang to Christ in heav'n He must not stayH
-
O Mary kneel at the great white throneI
And pray with your children thereE
Our hearts need his heart 'tis sweet and fairE
Like the sound of hymns and the breath of prayerE
Goeth he now we are lone so loneI
And who is there left to careE
-
'Twas the cry of the souls who loved him soF
But the Angel of Death sang Children noF
And a voice like Christ's from the far awayH
Sounded sweet and low He may not stayH
-
From his sister's heart swept the wildest moanI
O God let my brother stayH
I need him the most oh me how loneI
If he passes from earth awayH
O beautiful Christ for my poor sakeJ
Let him live for me else my heart will breakJ
-
But the Angel of Death wept Poor child noF
And Christ sang Child I will soothe thy woeF
-
O Christ let his sister's prayer be heardK
Let her look on his face once moreL
Ah that prayer was a wail without a wordK
She will look on him nevermoreL
-
The long gray distances unmoved sweptM
'Tween the dying eyes and the eyes that weptM
-
He was dying fast and the hours went byN
Ah desolate hours were theyH
His mind had hidden away somewhereE
Back of a fretted and wearied browO
Ere he passed from life awayH
And one who loved him at dead of nightP
Crept up to an altar where the lightP
That guards Christ's Eucharistic sleepQ
Shone strangely down on his vowO
Spare him O God O God for meR
Take me beautiful Christ insteadS
Let me taste of death and come to TheeR
I will sleep for him with the deadS
-
The Angel of Death said No Priest NoF
You must suffer and live but he must goF
And a voice like Christ's sang far awayH
He will come to me but you must stayH
-
We leaned on hope that was all in vainT
'Till the terrible word at lastU
Told our stricken hearts he was out of painT
And his beautiful life had passedU
-
Oh take him away from where he diedV
Put him not with the common deadS
For he was so pure and fairE
And the city was stirred and thousands criedV
Whose tears were a very prayerE
-
No no no take him home againW
For his bishop's heart beats thereE
Cast him not with the common deadS
Let him go home and rest his headS
Ah his weary and grief worn headS
On the heart of his father he is mildX
For he loved him as his own childX
-
And they brought him home to the home he blestY
With his life so sweet and fairE
He blessed it more in his deathly restY
His face was a chiseled prayerE
White as the snow pure as the foamZ
Of a weary wave on the seaR
He drifted back and they placed him whereE
He would love at last to beR
-
His Father in God thought over the yearsA2
Of the beautiful happy pastU
Ah me we were happy then but nowO
The sorrow has come and saddest tearsB2
Kiss the dead priest's virgin browO
-
Who will watch o'er the dead young priestC2
People and priests and allD2
No no no 'tis his spirit's feastC2
When the evening shadows fallD2
Let him rest alone unwatched aloneI
Just beneath the altar's lightP
The holy hosts on their humble throneI
Will watch him all thro' the nightP
-
The doors were closed he was still and fairE
What sound moved up the aislesE2
The dead priests come with soundless prayerE
Their faces wearing smilesE2
And this was the soundless hymn they sungF2
We watch o'er you to nightP
Your life was beautiful fair and youngF2
Not a cloud upon its lightP
To morrow to morrow you will restY
With the virgin priests whom Christ has blestY
-
Kyrie Eleison the stricken crowdG2
Bowed down their heads in tearsB2
O'er the sweet young priest in his vestment shroudG2
Ah the happy happy yearsA2
They are dead and gone and the Requiem MassH2
Went slowly mournfully onI2
The Pontiff's singing was all a wailJ2
The altars cried and the people weptM
The fairest flower in the church's valeJ2
Ah me how soon we passH2
In the vase of his coffin sleptM
-
We bore him out to his resting placeK2
Children priests and allD2
There was sorrow on almost ev'ry faceK2
And ah what tears did fallD2
Tears from hearts for a heart asleepQ
Tears from sorrow's deepest deepQ
-
Dust to dust he was lowered downL2
Children kneel and prayH
Give the white rose priest a flower and crownL2
For the white rose passed awayH
-
And we wept our tears and left him thereE
And brought his memory homeZ
Ah he was beautiful sweet and fairE
A heavenly hymn a sweet still prayerE
Pure as the snow white as the foamZ
-
That seeks a lone far shoreL
Dead Priest bless from amid the blestY
The hearts that will guard thy place of restY
Forever forever forever moreL
