Thou art sleeping brother sleepingA
In thy lonely battle graveB
Shadows o'er the past are creepingA
Death the reaper still is reapingA
Years have swept and years are sweepingA
Many a memory from my keepingA
But I'm waiting still and weepingA
For my beautiful and braveB
-
When the battle songs were chantedC
And war's stirring tocsin pealedC
By those songs thy heart was hauntedC
And thy spirit proud undauntedC
Clamored wildly wildly pantedC
Mother let my wish be grantedC
I will ne'er be mocked and tauntedC
That I fear to meet our vauntedC
Foemen on the bloody fieldC
-
They are thronging mother throngingA
To a thousand fields of fameD
Let me go 'tis wrong and wrongingA
God and thee to crush this longingA
On the muster roll of gloryE
In my country's future storyE
On the field of battle goryE
I must consecrate my nameD
-
Mother gird my sword around meE
Kiss thy soldier boy good bye '-
In her arms she wildly wound theeE
To thy birth land's cause she bound theeE
With fond prayers and blessings crowned theeE
And she sobbed When foes surround theeE
If you fall I'll know they found theeE
Where the bravest love to dieC
-
At the altar of their nationF
Stood that mother and her sonF
He the victim of oblationF
Panting for his immolationF
She in priestess' holy stationF
Weeping words of consecrationF
While God smiled his approbationF
Blessed the boy's self abnegationF
Cheered the mother's desolationF
When the sacrifice was doneF
-
Forth like many a noble otherG
Went he whispering soft and lowH
Good bye pray for me my motherG
Sister kiss me farewell brotherG
And he strove his grief to smotherG
Forth with footsteps firm and fearlessI
And his parting gaze was tearlessI
Though his heart was lone and cheerlessI
Thus from all he loved to goH
-
Lo yon flag of freedom flashingA
In the sunny Southern skyC
On to death and glory dashingA
On where swords are clanging clashingA
On where balls are crushing crashingA
On 'mid perils dread appallingA
On they're falling falling fallingA
On they're growing fewer fewerG
On their hearts beat all the truerG
On on on no fear no falterG
On though round the battle altarG
There were wounded victims moaningA
There were dying soldiers groaningA
On right on death's danger bravingA
Warring where their flag was wavingA
While Baptismal blood was lavingA
All that field of death and slaughterG
On still on that bloody lavaJ
Made them braver and made them braverG
On with never a halt or waverG
On in battle bleeding boundingA
While the glorious shout swept soundingA
We will win the day or dieC
-
And they won it routed rivenF
Reeled the foemen's proud arrayK
They had struggled hard and strivenF
Blood in torrents they had givenF
But their ranks dispersed and drivenF
Fled in sullenness awayK
-
Many a heart was lonely lyingA
That would never throb againF
Some were dead and some were dyingA
Those were silent these were sighingA
Thus to die alone unattendedC
Unbewept and unbefriendedC
On that bloody battle plainF
-
When the twilight sadly slowlyE
Wrapped its mantle o'er them allL
Thousands thousands lying lowlyE
Hushed in silence deep and holyE
There was one his blood was flowingA
And his last of life was goingA
-
And his pulse faint fainter beatingA
Told his hours were few and fleetingA
And his brow grew white and whiterG
While his eyes grew strangely brighterG
There he lay like infant dreamingA
With his sword beside him gleamingA
For the hand in life that grasped itC
True in death still fondly clasped itC
There his comrades found him lyingA
'Mid the heaps of dead and dyingA
And the sternest bent down weepingA
O'er the lonely sleeper sleepingA
'Twas the midnight stars shone round himM
And they told us how they found himM
Where the bravest love to fallL
-
Where the woods like banners bendingA
Drooped in starlight and in gloomN
There when that sad night was endingA
And the faint far dawn was blendingA
With the stars now fast descendingA
There they mute and mournful bore himM
With the stars and shadows o'er himM
And they laid him down so tenderG
And the next day's sun in splendorG
Flashed above my brother's tombN
