Deep in the dark I hear the feet of GodA
He walks the world He puts His holy handB
On every sleeper only puts His handB
Within it benedictions for each oneC
Then passes on but ah whene'er He meetsD
A watcher waiting for Him He is gladE
Does God like man feel lonely in the darkF
He rests His hand upon the watcher's browG
But more than that He leaves His very breathH
Upon the watcher's soul and more than thisI
He stays for holy hours where watchers prayJ
And more than that He ofttimes lifts the veilsK
That hide the visions of the world unseenL
The brightest sanctities of highest soulsM
Have blossomed into beauty in the darkF
How extremes meet the very darkest crimesN
That blight the souls of men are strangely bornO
Beneath the shadows of the holy nightP
-
Deep in the dark I hear his holy feetQ
Around Him rustle archangelic wingsR
He lingers by the temple where His ChristS
Is watching in His Eucharistic sleepT
And where poor hearts in sorrow cannot restU
He lingers there to soothe their wearinessV
Where mothers weep above the dying childW
He stays to bless the mother's bitter tearsX
And consecrates the cradle of her childW
Which is to her her spirit's awful crossY
He shudders past the haunts of sin yet leavesZ
E'er there a mercy for the wayward heartsA2
Still as a shadow through the night He movesB2
With hands all full of blessings and with heartC2
All full of everlasting love ah meD2
How God does love this poor and sinful worldE2
-
The stars behold Him as He passes onF2
And arch His path of mercy with their raysG2
The stars are grateful He gave them their lightP
And now they give Him back the light He gaveH2
The shadows tremble in adoring aweI2
They feel His presence and they know His faceJ2
The shadows too are grateful could they prayJ
How they would flower all His way with prayersX
The sleeping trees wake up from all their dreamsK2
Were their leaves lips ah me how they would singL2
A grand Magnificat as His Mary sangM2
The lowly grasses and the fair faced flowersN2
Watch their Creator as He passes onF2
And mourn they have no hearts to love their GodA
And sigh they have no souls to be belovedO2
Man only man the image of his GodA
Lets God pass by when He walks forth at nightP
