The priests stood waiting in the holy placeA
Impatient of delayB
Isaiah had been readC
When sudden up the aisle there came a faceA
Like a lost sun's rayB
And the child was ledC
By Joachim and Anna Rays of graceA
Shone all about the childD
Simeon looked on and bowed his aged headC
Looked on the child and smiledD
-
Low were the words of Joachim He spakeE
In a tremulous wayB
As if he were afraidF
Or as if his heart were just about to breakE
And knew not what to sayB
And low he bowed his headC
While Anna wept the while he sobbing saidC
Priests of the holy temple will you takeE
Into your care our childD
And Simeon listening prayed and strangely smiledD
-
A silence for a moment fell on allG
They gazed in mute surpriseH
Not knowing what to sayB
Till Simeon spake Child hast thou heaven's callG
And the child's wondrous eyesH
Each look a lost sun's rayB
Turned toward the far mysterious wallG
Did the veil of the temple swayB
They looked from the curtain to the little childD
Simeon seemed to pray and strangely smiledD
-
Yes heaven sent me here Priests let me inI
And the voice was sweet and lowJ
Was it a dream by nightK
A voice did call me from this world of sinI
A spirit voice I knowJ
An angel pure and brightK
Leave father mother ' said the voice and win'J
I see my angel nowJ
The crown of a virgin's vow '-
I am three summers old a little childD
And Simeon seemed to pray the while he smiledD
-
Yes holy priests our father's God is greatL
And all His mercies sweetM
His angel bade me comeN
Come thro' the temple's beautiful gateL
He led my heart and feetM
To this my holy homeO
He said to me Three years your God will waitL
Your heart to greet and meet '-
I am three summers oldP
I see my angel nowJ
Brighter his wings than goldP
He knoweth of my vowJ
The priests in awe came closer to the childD
She wore an angel's look and Simeon smiledD
-
As if she were the very holy arkQ
Simeon placed his handR
On the fair pure headC
The sun had set and it was growing darkQ
The robed priests did standR
Around the child He saidC
Unto me priests and all ye Levites harkQ
This child is God's own giftS
Let us our voices liftS
In holy praise They gazed upon the childD
In wonderment and Simeon prayed and smiledD
-
And Joachim and Anna went their wayB
The little child she shedC
The tenderest human tearsT
The priests and Levites lingered still to prayB
And Simeon saidC
We teach the latter yearsU
The night is passing 'fore the coming dayB
Isaiah had been readC
Of our redemption and some way the childD
Won all their hearts Simeon prayed and smiledD
-
That night the temple's child knelt down to prayB
In the shadows of the aisleV
She prayed for you and meW
Why did the temple's mystic curtain swayB
Why did the shadows smileV
The child of Love's decreeW
Had come at last and 'neath the night stars' gleamX
The aged Simeon did see in dreamX
The mystery of the childD
And in his sleep he murmured prayer and smiledD
-
And twelve years after up the very aisleV
Where Simeon had smiledD
Upon her fair pure faceA
She came again with a mother's smileV
And in her arms a ChildD
The very God of graceA
And Simeon took the Infant from her breastY
And in glad tones and strongZ
He sang his glorious songZ
Of faith and hope and everlasting restY
