Dark Dark DarkA
The sun is set the day is deadB
Thy Feast has fledB
My eyes are wet with tears unshedB
I bow my headB
Where the star fringed shadows softly swayC
I bend my kneeD
And like a homesick child I prayC
Mary to theeD
-
Dark Dark DarkA
And all the day since white robed priestB
In farthest EastB
In dawn's first ray began the FeastB
I I the leastB
Thy least and last and lowest childB
I called on theeD
Virgin didst hear my words were wildB
Didst think of meD
-
Dark Dark DarkA
Alas and no The angels brightB
With wings as whiteB
As a dream of snow in love and lightB
Flashed on thy sightB
They shone like stars around thee QueenE
I knelt afarF
A shadow only dims the sceneE
Where shines a starF
-
Dark Dark DarkA
And all day long beyond the skyG
Sweet pure and highG
The angel's song swept sounding byG
TriumphantlyD
And when such music filled thy earH
Rose round thy throneI
How could I hope that thou wouldst hearH
My far faint moanI
-
Dark Dark DarkA
And all day long where altars standB
Or poor or grandB
A countless throng from every landB
With lifted handB
Winged hymns to thee from sorrow's valeJ
In glad acclaimK
How couldst thou hear my lone lips wailJ
Thy sweet pure nameK
-
Dark Dark DarkA
Alas and no Thou didst not hearH
Nor bend thy earH
To prayer of woe as mine so drearH
For hearts more dearH
Hid me from hearing and from sightB
This bright Feast dayC
Wilt hear me Mother if in its nightB
I kneel and prayC
-
Dark Dark DarkA
The sun is set the day is deadB
Thy Feast hath fledB
My eyes are wet with the tears I shedB
I bow my headB
Angels and altars hailed thee QueenE
All day ah beD
To night what thou hast ever beenL
A mother to meD
-
Dark Dark DarkA
Thy queenly crown in angels' sightB
Is fair and brightB
Ah lay it down for oh to nightB
Its jeweled lightB
Shines not as the tender love light shinesM
O Mary mildB
In the mother's eyes whose pure heart pinesM
For poor lost childB
-
Dark Dark DarkA
Sceptre in hand thou dost hold swayC
Fore'er and ayeG
In angel land but fair Queen prayC
Lay it awayC
Let thy sceptre wave in the realms aboveN
Where angels areH
But Mother fold in thine arms of loveN
Thy child afarH
-
Dark Dark DarkA
Mary I call Wilt hear the prayerH
My poor lips dareH
Yea be to all a Queen most fairH
Crown sceptre bearH
But look on me with a mother's eyesO
From heaven's blissP
And waft to me from the starry skiesO
A mother's kissP
-
Dark Dark DarkA
The sun is set the day is deadB
Her Feast has fledB
Can she forget the sweet blood shedB
The last words saidB
That evening Woman behold thy SonQ
Oh priceless rightB
Of all His children The last least oneQ
Is heard to nightB
