Waileth a woman O my GodA
A breaking heart in a broken breathB
A hopeless cry o'er her heart hope's deathB
Can words catch the chords of the winds that wailC
When love's last lily lies dead in the valeC
Let her aloneD
Under the rodA
With the infinite moanD
Of her soul for GodA
Ah song you may echo the sound of painE
But you never may shrineF
In verse or lineF
The pang of the heart that breaks in twainE
-
Waileth a woman O my GodA
Wind driven waves with no hearts that acheG
Why do your passionate pulses throbH
No lips that speak have ye souls that sobH
We carry the cross ye wear the crestI
We have our God and ye your shoreJ
Whither ye rush in the storm to restI
We have the havens of holy prayerK
And we have a hope have ye despairK
For storm rocked waves ye break evermoreJ
Adown the shores and along the yearsL
In the whitest foam of the saddest tearsM
And we as ye O waves gray wavesN
Drift over a sea more deep and wideO
For we have sorrow and we have deathB
And ye have only the tempest's breathB
But we have God when heart oppressedI
As a calm and beautiful shore of restI
-
O waves sad waves how you flowed betweenP
The crownless Prince and the exiled QueenP
-
Waileth a woman O my GodA
Her hopes are withered her heart is crushedQ
For the love of her love is cold and deadR
The joy of her joy hath forever fledR
A starless and pitiless night hath rushedQ
On the light of her life and far awayS
In Afric wild lies her poor dead childT
Lies the heart of her heart let her aloneD
Under the rodA
With her infinite moanD
O my GodA
He was beautiful pure and braveU
The brightest graceV
Of a royal raceV
Only his throne is but a graveU
Is there fate in fameW
Is there doom in namesX
Ah what did the cruel Zulu spearsL
Care for the prince or his mother's tearsM
What did the Zulu's ruthless lanceY
Care for the hope of the future FranceY
-
Crieth the Empress O my sonZ
He was her own and her only oneZ
She had nothing to give him but her loveA2
'Twas kingdom enough on earth aboveA2
She gave him an infinite faith in GodA
Let her cry her cryB2
Over her own and only oneZ
All the glory is gone is goneC2
Into her broken hearted sighB2
-
Moaneth a mother O my childT
And who can sound that depth of woeD2
Homeless throneless crownless nowE2
She bows her sorrow wreathed browE2
So fame and all its grandeurs goD2
Let her aloneD
Beneath the rodA
With her infinite moanD
O my GodA
