I love my mother the wildwoodA
I sleep upon her breastB
A day or two of childhoodA
And then I sink to restB
-
I had once a lovely sisterC
She was cradled by my sideD
But one Summer day I missed herC
She had gone to deck a brideD
-
And I had another sisterC
With cheeks all bright with bloomE
And another morn I missed herC
She had gone to wreathe a tombE
-
And they told me they had witheredF
On the bride's brow and the graveG
Half an hour and all their fragranceH
Died away which heaven gaveG
-
Two sweet faced girls came walkingI
Thro' my lonely home one dayJ
And I overheard them talkingI
Of an altar on their wayJ
-
They were culling flowers around meK
And I said a little prayerL
To go with them and they found meK
And upon an altar fairL
-
Where the Eucharist was lyingI
On its mystical death bedM
I felt myself a dyingI
While the Mass was being saidM
-
But I lived a little longerC
And I prayed there all the dayJ
Till the evening BenedictionN
When my poor life passed awayJ
