Into a temple vast and dimA
Solemn and vast and dimA
Just when the last sweet Vesper HymnA
Was floating far awayB
With eyes that tabernacled tearsC
Her heart the home of tearsC
And cheeks wan with the woes of yearsD
A woman went one dayB
-
And one by one adown the aislesE
Adown the long lone aislesE
Their faces bright with holy smilesE
That follow after prayerF
The worshipers in silence passedG
In silence slowly passed awayB
The woman knelt until the lastG
Had left her lonely thereF
-
A holy hush came o'er the placeH
O'er the holy placeH
The shadows kissed her woe worn faceH
Her forehead touched the floorI
The wreck that drifted thro' the yearsD
Sin driven thro' the yearsD
Was floating o'er the tide of tearsC
To Mercy's golden shoreI
-
Her lips were sealed they could not prayB
They sighed but could not prayB
All words of prayer had died awayB
From them long years agoJ
But ah from out her eyes there roseK
Sad from her eyes there roseK
The prayer of tears which swiftest goesK
To Heaven winged with woeJ
-
With weary tears her weary eyesL
Her joyless weary eyesL
Wailed forth a rosary and her sighsL
And sobs strung all the beadsM
The while before her spirit's gazeN
Her contrite spirit's gazeN
Moved all the mysteries of her daysN
And histories of her deedsM
-
Still as a shadow while she weptO
So desolately weptO
Up thro' the long lone aisle she creptO
Unto an altar fairF
Mother her pale lips said no moreI
Could say no moreI
The wreck at last reached Mercy's shoreI
For Mary's shrine was thereF
