Those hearts of ours how strange how strangeA
How they yearn to ramble and love to rangeA
Down through the vales of the years long goneB
Up through the future that fast rolls onC
-
To days are dull so they wend their waysD
Back to their beautiful yesterdaysD
The present is blank so they wing their flightE
To future to morrows where all seems brightE
-
Build them a bright and beautiful homeF
They'll soon grow weary and want to roamF
Find them a spot without sorrow or painG
They may stay a day but they're off againH
-
Those hearts of ours how wild how wildI
They're as hard to tame as an Indian childI
They're as restless as waves on the sounding seaJ
Like the breeze and the bird are they fickle and freeJ
-
Those hearts of ours how lone how loneK
Ever forever they mourn and moanK
Let them revel in joy let them riot in cheerL
The revelry o'er they're all the more drearL
-
Those hearts of ours how warm how warmM
Like the sun's bright rays like the Summer's charmN
How they beam and burn how they gleam and glowO
Their flash and flame hide but ashes belowO
-
Those hearts of ours how cold how coldP
Like December's snow on the waste or woldP
And though our Decembers melt soon into MayQ
Hearts know Decembers that pass not awayQ
-
Those hearts of ours how deep how deepR
You may sound the sea where the corals sleepR
Where never a billow hath rumbled or rolledP
Depths still the deeper our hearts hide and holdP
-
Where the wild storm's tramp hath ne'er been knownK
The wrecks of the sea lie low and loneK
Thus the heart's surface may sparkle and glowO
There are wrecks far down there are graves belowO
-
Those hearts of ours but after allS
How shallow and narrow how tiny and smallS
Like scantiest streamlet or Summer's least rillT
They're as easy to empty as easy to fillT
-
One hour of storm and how the streams pourL
One hour of sun and the streams are no moreL
One little grief how the tears gush and glideU
One smile flow they ever so fast they are driedU
-
Those hearts of ours how wise how wiseV
They can lift their thoughts till they touch the skiesV
They can sink their shafts like a miner boldP
Where wisdom's mines hide their pearls and goldP
-
Aloft they soar with undazzled gazeD
Where the halls of the Day King burn and blazeD
Or they fly with a wing that will never failW
O'er the sky's dark sea where the star ships sailW
-
Those hearts of ours what fools what foolsX
How they laugh at wisdom her cant and rulesX
How they waste their powers and when wasted grieveY
For what they have squandered but cannot retrieveY
-
Those hearts of ours how strong how strongZ
Let a thousand sorrows around them throngZ
They can bear them all and a thousand moreL
And they're stronger then than they were beforeL
-
Those hearts of ours how weak how weakA2
But a single word of unkindness speakA2
Like a poisoned shaft like a viper's fangB2
That one slight word leaves a life long pangB2
-
Those hearts of ours but I've said enoughC2
As I find that my rhyme grows rude and roughC2
I'll rest me now but I'll come againH
Some other day to resume my strainG
