Rhyme Scheme: ABAAAABCDDCDC EEFFGHH AIAIIJJKK LKLKMBNNM OIOIOOI PIPI| Crushed with a burden of woe | A |
| Wrecked in the tempest of sin | B |
| Death came and two lips murmured low | A |
| Ah once I was white as the snow | A |
| In the happy and pure long ago | A |
| But they say God is sweet is it so | A |
| Will He let a poor wayward one in | B |
| In where the innocent are | C |
| Ah justice stands guard at the gate | D |
| Does it mock at a poor sinner's fate | D |
| Alas I have fallen so far | C |
| Oh God Oh my God 'tis too late | D |
| I have fallen as falls a lost star | C |
| - | |
| The sky does not miss the gone gleam | E |
| But my heart like the lost star can dream | E |
| Of the sky it has fall'n from Nay | F |
| I have wandered too far far away | F |
| Oh would that my mother were here | G |
| Is God like a mother Has He | H |
| Any love for a sinner like me | H |
| - | |
| Her face wore the wildness of woe | A |
| Her words the wild tones of despair | I |
| Ah how can a heart sink so low | A |
| How a face that was once bright and so fair | I |
| Can be furrowed and darkened with care | I |
| Wild rushed the hot tears from her eyes | J |
| From her lips rushed the wildest of sighs | J |
| Her poor heart was broken but then | K |
| Her God was far gentler than men | K |
| - | |
| A voice whispered low at her side | L |
| Child God is more gentle than men | K |
| He watches by passion's dark tide | L |
| He sees a wreck drifting and then | K |
| He beckons with hand and with voice | M |
| And he sees the poor wreck floating in | B |
| To the haven on Mercy's bright shore | N |
| And He whispers the whisper of yore | N |
| The angels of heaven rejoice | M |
| O'er the sinner repenting of sin ' | - |
| - | |
| - | |
| - | |
| And a silence came down for a while | O |
| And her lips they were moving in prayer | I |
| And her face it wore just such a smile | O |
| As perhaps it was oft wont to wear | I |
| Ere the heart of the girl knew a guile | O |
| Ere the soul of the girl knew the wile | O |
| That had led her to passion's despair | I |
| - | |
| Death's shadows crept over her face | P |
| And softened the hard marks of care | I |
| Repentance had won a last grace | P |
| And the Angel of Mercy stood there | I |
