See the field of battle gleamsA
Yonward past the tented streamsA
There the foe is campingB
By the thirst assuaging rillC
From the copse behind the hillC
Hear his war steeds champingB
-
Northern Knights and Southern SonsD
Onward to the gleaming gunsD
Now's the hour of battleE
Though his files be ten to oneF
Seek the foe from sun to sunF
Where his muskets rattleE
-
O'er the walls with slaughter wetG
O'er the ball scarred parapetG
Daring man and missileE
Charge to meet his best or worstH
Where his shrieking bombshells burstH
And his bullets whistleE
-
Roll in waves of living blueI
Pierce the columned centre throughI
Fill the world with wonderJ
Rush as with a lion's willC
Where his lightnings flash to killC
And his cannon thunderJ
-
Meet him with a tiger's springB
Quicker than an eagle's wingB
Where the bayonet piercestH
When you feel the foeman's breathK
Soldier strike for life or deathK
Where the fight is fiercestH
-
Than a coward proved and knownL
Better be to atoms blownL
Where the doomed are dyingB
Welcome death in wildest wayM
But to mingle with that clayM
Where the brave are lyingB
-
Thus will Honor be our meedH
For some doubly daring deedH
When we end our storyN
Then in graves with roses blownL
By the hands of patriots strownL
We will sleep in gloryN
