Adieu to France Land of the Brave farewellA
Sleep sweetly there thy sons will watch by theeB
High as thy hills their burning blood will swellA
To leave thee as they find thee fair and freeB
The nations gaze and tremble at thy spellA
A vision of eternal LibertyB
Emerging from a swift and bloody birthC
The terror wonder glory of the earthC
-
Yet France farewell One son may find his graveD
Beneath thy soil and leave thee marching stillE
Napoleon with his millions of the braveD
Along the paths of glory at thy willE
Soldiers farewell And when your banners waveD
Above my bones beside some nameless hillE
Stop not the thunder of your glorious treadF
To mark me sleeping with th' inglorious deadF
-
And farewell Foes Brave hearts and grand of soulG
We fought in fierceness now in peace we partH
My luckless heart hath ever been the goalG
Sought by your sabres but in vain O HeartH
Welcome to death amid the drum's far rollG
Great souls where I no more will dare your dartH
'Tis best to die where war's bluff banners waveD
Swathed in your guerdon Bravest of the braveD
-
Farewell the storm voiced Steed the hero HorseI
That snuffs the battle's sulphury breath afarJ
The proudest form the best compacted forceI
That hurls the earthquake on the field of warK
No more I'll ride on his terrific courseI
That meteor maddened through the lines ajarJ
While the foe blanching at the onset reelsL
Before his breath and thunder of his heelsL
-
Farewell volcanic din Olympian brattleM
The bursting bomb the thousand throated cheerN
Tartarean roar the volleyed rifle rattleM
The rocket's lightning line of fire and fearN
I sought my fate 'mid foes in brilliant battleM
Gorging with souls the hungry atmosphereN
I find my fate from one cold coward's commandO
A dozen bullets and a friendly handO
-
Thus I once Michael Ney Marshal of FranceP
And soon a heap of dust dishonored sinkQ
I who have vanned the Empire's fierce advanceP
In triple continents of fame to drinkQ
And bore its backward but still levelled lanceP
From Borodino to the icy brinkQ
Of Beresina thence defiance hurledR
To the linked thunders of th' embattled worldR
-
No bandage bring Stark eyed the hero diesS
Do you not know that thus for twenty yearsT
I've faced both ball and bullet for no prizeS
But weal of France my country In man's earsT
Yea and before God's all beholding eyesS
I swear I never wronged her But Death nearsT
Marshal no more behold a man expireU
So now make ready Aim Dear comrades fireV
