Custer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH CICI

Foiled on the field with his dead boys around himA
All waiting for Earth to recover her ownB
Fortune hath missed him but Glory hath found himA
While fighting a thousand fierce foemen aloneB
-
Custer's the right wing the left and the centerC
Himself is his only reserve and supplyD
This is a battle for Spartans to enterC
Where One makes an army to conquer or dieD
-
Straight on his steed doth he meet the grim battleE
The red line of danger grows deadly and largeF
Loud from the hills rings the rifleman's rattleE
But Custer is ready so forward and chargeF
-
Firing with left hand and fencing with rightG
The reins in his teeth like a handless young HunH
What is his fate in the terrible fightG
The thousands hath slain him yet Custer hath wonH
-
His foemen still seek him in terror and wonderC
Alive in the tempest that darkens the valeI
His charge they still fear in the echoing thunderC
His sword in the lightning his voice in the galeI
