Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH AIAI JKJK LMLM NONO PQPRThe castle clock had tolled midnight | A |
With mattock and with spade | B |
And silent by the torches' light | A |
His corse in earth we laid | B |

The coffin bore his name that those | C |
Of other years might know | D |
When earth its secrets should disclose | C |
Whose bones were laid below | D |
- | |
Peace to the dead no children sung | E |
Slow pacing up the nave | F |
No prayers were read no knell was rung | E |
As deep we dug his grave | F |
- | |
We only heard the winter's wind | G |
In many a sullen gust | H |
As o'er the open grave inclined | G |
We murmured Dust to dust | H |
- | |
A moonbeam from the arch's height | A |
Streamed as we placed the stone | I |
The long aisles started into light | A |
And all the windows shone | I |

We thought we saw the banners then | J |
That shook along the walls | K |
Whilst the sad shades of mail d men | J |
Were gazing on the stalls | K |
- | |
'Tis gone again on tombs defaced | L |
Sits darkness more profound | M |
And only by the torch we traced | L |
The shadows on the ground | M |
- | |
And now the chilling freezing air | N |
Without blew long and loud | O |
Upon our knees we breathed one prayer | N |
Where he slept in his shroud | O |
- | |
We laid the broken marble floor | P |
No name no trace appears | Q |
And when we closed the sounding door | P |
We thought of him with tears | R |
